It sounds like Matt Damon is making up his political view as he goes. He sounds very edumacated.
  • Henry Coe 6 months ago
He's obviously not there as a politician and he's answering questions on the fly as an American who votes and has an opinion. I guess you would need to be an American to understand that when we disagree, we voice our opinions. We don't just attack people with smear. That's what terrorist do.
As far as his education, he attended Harvard from 88' to 92' but he didn't graduate. He made an error thinking an early film he was in was going to make big dollars. He had an error in judgement, but I don't think he's dumb. What school did you get into?

Um. He's an actor, not a politician, idiot.

    Quote by Michelle Malkin:

"What Damon’s superficial tirade lacked, however, was any real-world understanding of the deterioration of core-curricular learning in America. Students can’t master simple division or fractions because today’s teachers -- churned out through lowest-common-denominator grad schools and shielded from competition -- have barely mastered those skills themselves. Un-educators have abandoned “drill-and-kill” computation for multicultural claptrap and fuzzy math, traded in grammar fundamentals for “creative spelling” and dropped standard civics for save-the-earth propaganda."

I agree with this assessment. Instead of encouraging reading as fundamental, the current school system encourages sharing your feelings as fundamental. It is a fact that American children are falling lower and lower in our scores globally. The reason is we are not teaching children the fundamentals.

There is no reason why teachers shouldn't be held accountable to the same standards the rest of us working folks are. I am a freelance 3D artist. If I don't deliver quality work based on the requirements of my client and on time then my client will no longer use my services or pay me for my work. Why should teachers have some kind of special dispensation that the rest of us don't have?

Because of our hijacked public school system, I chose to teach my children at home through the oversight of a private school of my choice. My children who are in 4th and 5th grade are scoring higher than average with some subjects scoring on a high school or post-high school level. I'd like to see Matt Damon speak to that.

By the way, I think Matt Damon is a great actor. I just very much disagree with his world view :)
  • Bill Macomber 6 months ago
No offense but everything you said lost validation just off of the fact that you think a view of American politics is a worldview. Someone's opinion on the famine in Somolia and it's increasing role in rebel force's recruitment would be a world view, not someone's opinions on American taxation. Now my opinion is either you're insanely rich and want to horde your money of you haven't been paying attention since the 80's where Reagan invented this type of economic system where we cut taxes on the rich hoping that it'll create jobs but the only time where job growth and economic stability has remained in the green is when Clinton was in office, a president who followed Keynesian economic theory, not supply side.

I will be making somewhere around $35,000 to $40,000 this year. So, I am guessing I am not considered rich here in America. But at any rate, I am not sure how my income fits into the debate. For some reason there are some out there who think rich people are evil. Since I am not rich I am assuming I am not evil :). Although, I have enjoyed the assumptions you made about my income and ability to pay attention to what has been happening since the 80's.

Anyways, back on topic. Worldview is the basic beliefs a person has that determine how they interpret the world around them and how they should interact with it (my definition, not wikipedia's).

For example, two scientist can see the same facts and evidence and interpret what it means very differently, like an evolutionist versus a creationist. It is the same in politics.

I guarantee you that my worldview is entirely different than Matt Damon's. He would probably not agree with my set of beliefs and sees the world through his set of beliefs. It is those beliefs that will determine how we vote, where we stand on abortion, how we think our kids should be educated, how the economy should be run etc..

As you pointed out Reagan and Clinton both had very different beliefs on how a country and an economy should be run. I happen to agree with Reagan's and not with Matt Damon's. It's that simple :).

A man with a camera walked up to him and started asking questions. He doesn't have canned responses ready to go. Look up any other video of Matt Damon discussing politics, he believes what he is saying and he's usually right.

@richard - Then why speak ignorance. Just say "i prefer not to say" or "I really want to learn more before making judgements". He is spewing verbal vomit. Rabbit trailing everywhere and making himself look silly. I agree with you that his interviews are usually very well spoken and he makes sense of the topics no matter what side he is on. I would have thought a guy like that would no better than to do this. Either way, its a good discussion.
  • Can you please point out at which point(s) he spewed his ignorance?

The wealthy already are responsible for the majority of the tax income in the US. So little is asked of those with money? If you own an LLC there is much more asked of you than anyone else. "Is it too much to be asked to pay 6%?" Yes, it absolutely is..."Raise it per million dollars?" What makes him think that is where it would stop? Small business owners are already bleeding enough tax money. Does he know every upper class person, their family and what their sons and daughters are doing with their lives? "None of them are serving?" How the hell would he know. The GOP does not want to raise taxes because after the last time this happened, Reagan cut taxes and fixed the Carter debacle. He obviously is grabbing for anything he can find and makes rash statements that do night align with facts. This to me equals ignorance.

I think you should have a look at this, and then reconsider what you're spewing here yourself. motherjones.com/politics/2011/02/income-inequality-in-america-chart-graph

    Read this too. outsidethebeltway.com/congressmen_with_sons_in_iraq/

You just backed yourself in to a corner. So who's the ignoramus now; you or Matt Damon?

  • Kristopher S. Kimlin plus 6 months ago
Did I say congressmen Lyndon? No, I said upper class. However if you would like to narrow the definition of upper class to those in congress, feel free to do so. It really baffles me that your anger with my statement has led to you finding the very first article you could on google and posting it. We are all entitled to doing what will make us feel better right? I would like to see the percentages of US citizens with children in the war and I am sure its roughly the same as congress. Did you ever think about that? So does this make the overwhelming majority of Americans with children pieces of crap as you would like to act they are? Ignoramus who? Have a nice day.

Damon is completely right. Our rich are paying less than they have paid since the 20's (a period before the great depression) and we've spent so much money on these wars. It doesn't add up, the Republicans have done some very bad math throughout the beginning of the 21st century. I'll take a tax increase if it's necessary and I don't make anywhere near even 50,000 dollars.

Doesn't matter if soaking the rich would even work or not. The point is, that capital leaves the country if you make it uncomfortable for them.

We ought to be encouraging wealthy people to spend their money here in America, not elsewhere.
