Just want to say a note of thank to everyone's support and comments.

I sought out to capture the electric radiance of Los Angeles at night.

It took me 6 months of on and off shooting to finish this project and I've learned a couple things along the way.

First off, LA might be the entertainment capital of the world, but it sure is difficult to shoot around downtown without having homeland security officers, police, or security take notice and harass you. Know your shooting rights!

Shooting time lapses is a labor of love and a study in patience.

This video is dedicated to the memory of my Grandmother, Mary Johnson who passed away after battling cancer. She spent most of her life bettering the lives of others and was the kindest person I've ever known.

This is absolutely brilliant! My favorite shot is of the Bonaventure! I love shooting time lapses and love watching them even more. Such a great job.
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
Bonaventure is amazing! Architecture was so ahead of its time. (plus the restaurant spins around.) I have yet to eat there but I'm looking forward to it someday
  • JD Raimer plus 6 months ago
I have a video on my Vimeo page of a time lapse I did while in the restaurant atop the Bonaventure. It's a 360 Los Angeles Time Lapse. (vimeo.com/16457788)

Your timelapses have an HDR look to them.. did you process these individually at all? Or was it just general colour correction as a sequence basis.
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
The sequence looking down on the masonic library looks hdr but that was just the exposure and perhaps the juxtposition between dark and light shots. Each sequence was cc'd based on the movement and the tone. I tried to shoot in a low kelvin range to maintain a white balance with mercury vapor lamps.

Those shots behind the Hollywood sign are golden.
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
Thanks Sam. They were a pain in the butt to get but was worth it in the end. The park is closed at night, and every ten minutes a security car passed by and I had to jump over a fence off the main road and hide until they passed by. There are also infrared cameras all over the sign. I was sure I was going to get caught.
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
Also a two mile hike just to get up there :0
  • Better Yeti 6 months ago
Oh for sure. I ride up to the helipad on my mountain bike a couple times a week, and I'm always seeing people getting hauled off when they try to hop the cyclone fence and get down to the sign. The cops aren't fooling around. Every now and then they send out the helicopter, and the ominous PA blast: "GET AWAY FROM THE SIGN". Very dystopian/1984-ish.
  • Zach Eastburg plus 6 months ago
hahahha yeah when I saw the sign I was yelling "whhhhhaaat commmon.. how did he.. ahh man..."

The juice was worth the squeeze, great job on the video!

Amazing work Colin! Love the shot at LAX with the arriving planes and the one with the elevators. Keep up the great work! Just reposted it on Twitter
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
Those planes are angelic, swooping, dashes of light. Love your stuff btw and thanks for the post!!!
  • Mario Feil 6 months ago
Really? I thought of a lot of planes landing. But I guess they would look more like fast streaks...
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
The moon shot really shows you the air traffic into LAX. Shot over several hours, you can see the planes streak across the sky like tracer fire from a machine gun.

So. F'ing. Good. Incredible composition in almost every shot. Mind blowing.
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago

    Colin,
Not every day that time-lapse cinematography makes me cry. And I live directly below the Hollywood sign on the ridge between Beachwood and Bronson Cave, so I should have a thicker skin for these scenes. But it made me appreciate my 'hood quite a bit more.

You are my new favorite filmmaker. Thanks for this.
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
You're making me blush. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's been quite a ride and along the way, its taken me places I've never been.

is there any moco shots? did you do these on post.
whats your workflow if you dont mind would you tell me?
i shot all manuel then adobe bridge adjust settings at camera raw on first image then copy paste on others.LRTimelapse for deflicker then After effects and export as a mov.
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
Yes, I have a couple of devices. A kessler cineslider, a revolution head and a couple of homemade devices I use for zoom control. Shoot raw but effect in camera using Kelvin settings and everything else depends on what I am going for stylistically and what my subject motion/mood is.

Dude that was so good! I lived in LA for 3 years and it brought back lots of memories and you really captured how LA streets almost become the veins of the world with people and cars rushing through them...well done!
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
It's interesting to step back and look at it like that but the city is a living breathing organism (obviously not literally) but the energy is palpable. love this place even if the traffic is awful.

I've been looking forward to this ever since you started posting the stills a little while back. And as awesome as they were, this video absolutely blew me away. So many amazing shots that I couldn't begin to pick a favorite. There are lots of time lapses out there, but this is truly a work of art. So inspiring, and such a great tribute...
  • Colin Rich plus 6 months ago
It was hard to hold back at times. I would go out and shoot something and be like "I should put this up on fb". I'm glad you enjoyed it. It makes it that much more enjoyable to do when you can share it with other people.
