A powerful magnet allows researchers to detect cancer by focusing on specific molecules.
A 7-Tesla magnet, about five times more powerful than the ones found in an average clinical MRI machine, gives researchers at UT Southwestern’s Advanced Imaging Research Center the ability to track cancers by detecting molecules unique to malignant cells. Such fingerprinting might someday enable doctors to tailor treatment with therapies customized to match a cancer’s specific biochemical makeup.
