Greenhouse Effect's three piece presentation and loud powerful sound marked them as one of California's greatest bands in their heyday and a top internet draw in 2009. These days, drummer/ Lead vocalist later turned guitarist Clark Hagins can talk about his days as a member of one of rock's most innovative groups. "When we played live,..it had to be great,...there was always only three of us and we lived dangerously,..we had a great guitarist in Phil Keegan (Dr. Phil),..he could cover the wrythm and the lead very well well,..his lead playing was always bizarre and he swirled with like these Pakistani-India sounding dorian scales,..maybe Arabian..i donno.." (Laughs),...Ted (Rick Carmody) was solid on bass...we were very tight live because i was a good drummer,..i tried to take what Kieth Moon did but then tighten it up and maybe mix it with some Niel Peart or Ginger Baker,..maybe even Gene Kruppa (Laughs) ..or BUddy Rich....but then i sang lead on top of that,..i knew i had to do well and perfect it because i hoped to one day impress Robert Wyatt of Soft Machine,..certainly not Don Henley from the Eagles,..that guy is fucking dick !! (Laughs),..maybe that one dude from that band back in the late 80's early 90's,..i forget his band...they did that song "The king is half dressed"..that guy was kinda rad,..too bad they really didn't make it huge enough to last around,..because they really had something special,...that one ! they sorta faded away and now they're forgotten - sorta like us *(Laughs),..its a bummer when that happens to a good band,...
The internet has become a huge tool for G.e. with their mass marketing ,..and each day now Greenhouse effect has become a major staple,..widely viewed and downloaded...applauded from country to country,...Hagins now dreams of a G.e. 're-union' with Keegan and Carmody or the later incarnation of the band with punk drummer Greg Tarpley,...."Our band really changed" says higgins "we were real classic rock - almost metal,...but when Phil was gone,..we became like very 'alternative to even punk rock like,..but we mixed in some gay shit like U2 and the cure,...our 80's kroq influences began to show more"...
The band officially split in 1992 after higgins witnessed Seattle band Nirvana playing on the mtv Vma's in September of that year..."When i saw Nirvana hitting the big time and blowing up,..it broke my heart because i kept on saying that coulda been me,...it angered me that they were just a three piece like G.e. but i felt that they were nowhere as good as G.e. ....i saw the leftwing media hyping them up,..talking about how Kurt suffered such a traumatic childhood and that really pissed me off as the same guys at Geffen records who worked with Nirvana behind the scenes were the exact same guys i had been talking to for years,..me trying to secure a record deal,..even the same lawyer!! these guys wouldn't help me or take Greenhouse effect serious at all i guess,....then one day i woke up and i saw that Nirvana was signed to Geffen,...it just broke my spirit ..and i gave up,..i tried to rev up the will to continue but Ted quitting the band and joining up with another band,..that just hurt too,..in December of 1992,...the band was just over,...i tried to form another three piece with some new people,..but it just wasn't G.e. ..i tried to call Flipper back but by 1993,..he had already moved up to San Jose california and met a wife,....i had no money to record....all the life savings money i had i threw into my 1994 'Fountain' cd,...and the 1995 "Rock Opera White Suburban Liar$" cd,....it was a bad tiime,...in 97' i moved down to san diego,..cleaning swimming pools and thats where i still am.....
