Another study in simple harmonic motion and the nature of complex patterns created from the interaction of multilayered rhythms.

Here 30 nodes are oscillating with fixed periods in simple harmonic motion, with each node having a slightly different frequency. The total loop cycle duration is exactly 120 seconds (60s for the audio).

General information at memo.tv/simple_harmonic_motion

Specific information about this particular simulation and audio at memo.tv/30_chromatic_metronomes_at_0_29_bpm

Visuals made with openFrameworks, audio with SuperCollider

The motion reminds me of those rotating lamps they sell which are supposed to induce trances.

  • Fascinating.Never really had a chance to study generative music / melodies, but this approach is well inspiring !

    wow, very cool!

Last time I stumbled over the Math book of Johannes Keplers "The harmony of the world"... Looks very interesting...

Maybe it is interesting for the generative design folks

pretty! i watched it without sound first, then with sound, and found it a little jarring; the sound isn't as elegant as the visuals. maybe use an electroplankton style scale rather than a chromatic one? they're variations on pentatonic scales right? (music theory isn't my strong suit...)

At first I heard it, then I must laugh because it is an disorder in order. MAYBE THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL (visual) EXPLANATION FOR THE MAYAN CALENDAR.
(When all the sounds come together it stands for 21st Dec. 2012, so you will understand the different cycles.)
