Random shots taken with the HG20. Trying to see what this little camera is capable of. So far I'm liking my results.

WOW! Just ordered my Hg20. I'd love to know how you shot some of these. Especially the intro w/ the leaf and dripping water. AMAZING!

Enjoy, I'm loving mine so far. I just used the manuel focus and adjusted the shutter speed. The camera is pretty flexable once you figure it out. It's been fun!

Are you using a 35MM adapter for DOF or anything, or just what comes w/ the camera?
  • ALCHEMYcreative plus 3 years ago
just normal in camera stuff. The manuel focus works amazingly well. I was able to get extremely close stuff that I would only think a macro lens could get. I do have a fisheye lens but it's not in any of this footage.

Great movie! How do you set the manual focus? I got my hg20 few weeks now and I cannot seem to find how to set the camcorder to manual focus.

Awesome footage. Well shot. I enjoy your rack focuses and shutter speed switches. Looks very impressive. Nice test, indeed. I'm getting the HG21 ASAP.

    Clean but why 24fps ?
30fps would give smoother panning no ?
  • ALCHEMYcreative plus 3 years ago
Yes but I wanted to test out the 24p setting. I prefer the more cinematic quality of 24fps cause it is a bit choppier rather than a super smooth video look of 30fps or 60i. Guess just personal preference. Looking forward to testing out the other frame rates for slow motion though.

did you use any lenses, converter or something to film this?
  • ALCHEMYcreative plus 3 years ago
No, just all in camera stuff. The only thing that I may have used was a polarizer filter but not other lens adapters or anything. Like I mentioned before I have a fisheye lens but none of this footage is using it. I'll probably post some more using that at some point.

Ok now i have my camera. but i can't put m2ts files into sony vegas. how did you do that?
  • ALCHEMYcreative plus 3 years ago
I don't use Vegas so not sure how you do it there. In Final Cut pro there is an option in the file menu to "Log and Transfer". That then basically allows you to do exactly what is says but also converts the AVCHD video from the camera to ProRes 422 (HQ) to edit with. I still haven't figured all that out just yet cause it seems to be importing my footage that I shot as 24fps to 29.97. So just haven't put in the time to figure that out. Hope this helps some.

    Nice filming,

I have Sony Vegas 9 Platinum and the HG 21, I use the Canon software to take the video from the camera then just import the files through Vegas the normal way. Make sure that you install the Canon editing software as i think it provides the codecs for viewing the files on WMP 11.
    Hope this helps

The video looks amazing. I have the HG20 and am having trouble converting the m2ts file type to a file type that holds the quality. I noticed you are using Final Cut Pro. What file type did you convert to in order to upload to Vimeo? Were you able to upload ProRes 422 (HQ)?
  • ALCHEMYcreative plus 3 years ago
I believe I did on one of my videos, and I think the other is compressed from ProRes (HQ) to H.264 (Automatic) bit rate. When you log and Transfer in FCP, it automatically converts the files to ProRes.

I'm looking at getting the HG20, but I was wondering how you are pulling the files off the camera. Do you have to play them back and capture them with software or can you just transfer the files at USB 2.0 speed and then edit them? I guess what I am wanting to know is, how long will it take to copy 30 min. of video of the camera for editing?
  • ALCHEMYcreative plus 2 years ago
It transfers over USB 2 not real time playback. You just mark your in and out points in the Log and Transfer part in FCP, and then clip add to Queue. It then just starts to download. It takes a little bit but not too bad.

  • ALCHEMYcreative plus 2 years ago

Hey Freedom Post. I just got the HG20 and am having lots of fun with it so far. Question- does it take a loooong time to transfer into FCP? It seems to be running very slow and I have a brand new Macbook Pro and have not had any slowness problems yet. I didn't download the ImageMixer program that came with the camera... could that be a problem? Thanks so much for your help!! :)

  • ALCHEMYcreative plus 1 year ago
Hey man, I actually don't have my camera anymore because I upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark II and can't remember how to do it. I did find this link on youtube with a good walkthrough, should do you right. Good luck!
