I teamed up with Lossa Engineering to make a short video on a Yamaha SR500 that was featured on Cafe Racer Season 1. I wanted to have all the shots at night, and no cars on the road, which was no easy task, but we pulled it off. After several nights of waiting for no traffic, and avoiding the police under the Long Beach Airport landing strip we did it. Enjoy.

Shot, Edited, and Directed by: Ricki Bedenbaugh

Locations: Long Beach and Los Angeles CA

Shot on Canon 7D
Glass: Canon 50mm 1.2, Canon 70-200mm 2.8, Canon 10-22mm
Edited with: Final Cut Pro
Color Treatment: Magic Bullet Looks
Motion Graphics: Adobe After Effects

Music:
Beethoven, Symphony 7

Ricki--how did you keep the camera so smooth on the tracking shots next to the bike (1:02-1:08) while it was on the road?
  • Ricki Bedenbaugh plus 6 months ago
Final Cut Smoothcam effect. Works like a charm
  •
  • John Williams plus 6 months ago
So you were handheld out the window, and you cut in Apple ProRes?
  • Ricki Bedenbaugh plus 6 months ago
Handheld, with a IS lens, cut in Final Cut Pro and Smooth Cam effect.

    Very nice!

What kind of helmet is the rider wearing and also what pipes are on that bike?

    Great video!
  • Ricki Bedenbaugh plus 6 months ago
I think the helmet is just a 3/4 helmet with just a bubble shield that snaps to it.

Amazing. It was great to see all the local spots, was that the traffic circle I saw?
  • Ricki Bedenbaugh plus 6 months ago
Thanks, yeah it was. Those were the hardest shots to get, because there are always cars going around it. He must of gone around that thing 20 times before I got what I wanted.

I cant understand why film makers like you don't get worldwide recognition. This is way better than all the sh** you can see at the movies or on tv. Great job, much respect.

I must have watched this video 100 times since its launch. I am with Lskyd, the production values are amazing and the style rivals the best shit out there. Epic work Ricki, you and Jay must be stoked. This is the way all Lossa Engineering's work should be showcased and show to the world.

For the shots where he was riding up from behind you, then passing you up/speeding ahead of you (1:42 - 1:50) were you simply shooting through the back and front windshield glass? How does that work. Great job.
  • Ricki Bedenbaugh plus 4 months ago
I had a camera clamped to the tow hitch mount for the rear shot, and a camera on sticks in the back of the truck. For the front shot I clamped the camera to the grill.
    Thanks for watching Brian.
  • Brian Wong plus 4 months ago
Interesting. I might need to do similar shooting in DC in couple weeks. Mind sharing the exact mount setup you had for both the tow hitch, and the front grill? I was considering maybe that Delkin Fat Gecko suction mount, but am afraid there is still too much camera vibration with it. Any suggestions for most affordable, stable solution, do share! Also, you weren't getting a lot of road shake while using sticks in the back? Thanks Ricki
  • Ricki Bedenbaugh plus 4 months ago
    I used this clamp
    bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546356-REG/Manfrotto_035RL_035RL_Super_Clamp_with.html
I've also used the Fat Gecko suction mount, it works great for shooting timelapse while driving.
I used a IS lens while shooting with my tripod in the back of my truck, so not a whole lot of shaking. Also used FCP smoothcam effect, which works great.

Did you use the 10-22mm for the close-ups? Personally i hate using it with low light.
