Mangroves are disappearing rapidly worldwide despite their well documented biodiversity and the ecosystem services they provide. The extreme undervaluation of the benefits generated by mangroves for fisheries versus the projected benefits of coastal development and aquaculture reveals a management crisis for coastal areas in the Gulf of California. The precarious state of coastal wetlands in the world in general cannot be ignored, in particular, in an age where food production has important implications for human welfare.
