2. Real Scenes: Detroit
You can't talk about electronic music without mentioning Detroit. That's why in the second edition of Real Scenes, RA and Bench went to the city which birthed the genre we now call techno.

Detroit has always had a creative streak, due in large part to the boom and subsequent bust of the auto industry. Quite simply, Detroit is a city of extremes, and its music reflects that. These days, Detroit's importance in the global electronic music scene is often referred to in the past tense. When we visited the city, though, we found a number of artists with their eyes (and ears) firmly set towards the future. After our time in the Motor City, it's clear to us that Detroit will endure and innovate for years to come.

wonderful documentary which echos a strong message to music makers and the importance of culture to a city and the regeneration it can aid.

it makes me think of the dancing the the street series with the interview with derrick may about the renegades of that time, it left a lot for questions of where to now and what will come, and its exciting to see spotlights on such a young generation making music and continuing the lineage

    fantastic, thankyou!

I have been to Detroit but I have viewed the video. I am more likely to visit. Thus, I am saddened though how the auto industrial abandoned this GREAT CITY! What a shame. Life moves forward.

Most crews come in for a week, try to cover everything, and end up missing the spirit of the place. Your focus was narrow, and you managed to capture the heart and soul here. Really lovely.

So. Damn. Good. The best produced segment from RA, I thought nothing could top Berlin, or Bristol but this one has so much depth, narrative and amazing cinematography. Cheers.

Given my fascination with Detroit, I wish I could share the almost ubiquitous praise in the comments section. While I have no wish to undermine the impressive production qualities, I find the tone and thematic trajectory of the documentary somewhat superficial and almost condescending - particularly compared to their more comprehensive and favorable highlights for Bristol and Berlin. In Bristol and Berlin, you see a depiction of thriving, energetic locales. With Detroit, you see a city almost wholly defined by a one-sided devotion to its faults. And while there are many to focus on, I think that RA is perhaps too regionally centered to be able to present Detroit with the appropriate amount of context. Which is to say that America is not Europe and they don't seem particularly aware of how to emphasize that.

When Electrifying Mojo is the person almost singularly responsible for popularizing the music, it's weird to focus on some kind of underground club culture as though Detroit music's origins and influences were similar to Germany's. And given that the music is rather ethnically centered/influenced with musicians mostly coming from the black middle class, it's very strange to present Detroit music as some remarkable response to unbearable poverty and desolation. This documentary is undeniably well done, but RA's focus sort of walks the boundary between disrespectful and ignorant. And even worse, they're taking this view toward the origin of the music that essentially created their existence without even proposing anything tangible to contribute to it, the city or its culture. The documentary seems to be more for RA fans than Detroit itself. One could even call it exploitative.

At the risk of saying too much, I elaborate more on my perspective here: click-play-stop.blogspot.com/2011/09/annual-woe-is-detroit-fest.html

Done well, but quite a bit of blight porn. There are as many beautiful areas in the city to document as well. Be sure to balance the images of our city and do not use us to sale your existing notions of us. Detroit love.

Absolutely gorgeous camera movement. This is an incredible piece. The message and the optimism along with the production quality and attention to fine details is something that all involved should be very very proud of. Cheers.
