very nice. whta lens have you used?you get the slow effets in after effect or in modifying shutterspeed in your eos 60D?
  • Rishi Kaneria 2 months ago
    I used:

    Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
    Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6
    Canon 50mm f/1.8

I shot at 60fps, but then also used Twixtor and After Effects to get that ultra slow mo effect.

    Cheers!

Really nice work Rishi, very clean, great editing and stunts of course. The guy is skilled.
Maybe I'd have tried to work a little bit more on colors, but that's working like that ;)
  • Rishi Kaneria 6 months ago
To me, having your comment on my video is like meeting one of my heroes :) Thanks for watching and for the feedback. I think you are right about the colors. Its the one thing I'm probably not 100 percent satisfied with. I felt I did a better job on "Hunting Leaves"...on this one I was having a tough time with the sky - especially since its in every shot and getting it consistent...I will try and loop back around to the colors when I have time. Thanks for the suggestion. You are a grading master by the way - love the color work on all your projects and I know its cause you put a lot of time into it. Cheers!

  • Rishi Kaneria 6 months ago
Ha! Yeah, a lot of people have been asking me this...I had two Canon 60D's going at the same time...but I also had him do the same stunt over and over again - and changed angles several times - ha - poor Dante, it was really hot that day - but he's a stunt man for a living so he was a real sport about it and always made his marks over and over again...he's amazing, brilliant and a pleasure to work with (not to mention a great friend).

  • Shams 6 months ago
Amazing, can you share some work-flow tips and camera settings etc
  • Rishi Kaneria 6 months ago
Sure. I found for Twixtor to be most successful you should shoot against a clean background (i.e. sky), shoot at atleast 60fps, shoot with a very high shutter speed (1/2000-1/4000), and use a tripod. When slowing down in post go for the apex of the motion - the point at which the speed of the subject is the slowest - that way you have less motion blur and you will get less warping. You may also need to create some motion/blur masks to hide some warping. I only had to do that for one shot - which was the shot of Dante upside down - his feet were warping so I simulated a shallow depth of field and blurred out his feet. Hope some of these tips help.

For specific Twixtor settings checkout this tutorial:

Also here is a great interview with Rickard Bengtsson:

    Good luck!

    Canon 50mm f/1.8

Hi Rishi ! Excellent work !

Which Lens did you used for the very slow motion effect ?
Did you only use the 60d ? I'm so impress

    Peace from France
  • Rishi Kaneria 4 months ago
Thanks! I used both the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and the Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 during those slow motion portions. Yes I used the 60D for all the shots. In case you missed it - I also used the After Effects frame blending plugin Twixtor for the ultra slo mo stuff...Cheers!

  • Wolfgang Weidner 5 months ago
Really great! But one technical remark (or question):
The slow motion is very slow in all the scenes. Is it always the same speed? Is there any kind of restriction enforced by twixter? I think it could add to this composition if some of the motions would be a little faster.
  • Rishi Kaneria 5 months ago
Thanks for the feedback! I think that's a very valid criticism regarding the speed - it asks a bit more patience in the viewer for sure...speeding it up a tad could help that I think. I was going for a "photo in motion" feel - trying to capture and meditate on the minute detail and poetry in those moments usually too fleeting to see - that is why I slowed down to about 1-2% . But regarding Twixtor you have complete control over when and by how much and to what curve you control the speed - so that is completely at your artistic discretion when working with the tool, which is great. You are a little limited to when you slow down - since you will notice warping at certain points and not at others and so you need to try and slow during those ranges when warping is the least. Thanks for watching!

  • THOMAS RING 5 months ago
The capture is in the frame-by-frame; a world even the perfomer is only vaguely aware of...
  • Rishi Kaneria 5 months ago
That is exactly what I was going for! Thanks for echoing that back to me - makes me feel very satisfied. Cheers. Appreciate your time in watching.

  • Maxximus Whitmire 5 months ago
awesome work! close up shots at .51 and .59 were super impressive. I tried a few like that in my twixtor projects and always had to take them out of the final cut.
  • Rishi Kaneria 5 months ago
Thanks! Yeah I think the key to the success of those shots with regards to Twixtor was that they were focused on the center hub (i.e. his head) of a cartwheel type motion and so the point at which the moving body's velocity was the slowest. The same close up on his feet would have too much warping with Twixtor because it is at the outer most radius of the circular motion and so moving the fastest and with too much motion blur...
  • Maxximus Whitmire 5 months ago
Yes this actually helps, exactly what i figured, I was trying it with fast foot movement of a skateboarder. I'll have to attempt again w another project and use that technique. Great work!

    Beautiful film!

Could you please tell me the name of the last piece of music?

    thanks
  • Rishi Kaneria 5 months ago
Thanks for watching! Regarding the music: the opening is from Clint Mansell's "Welcome To Lunar Industries" lifted from the "Moon" soundtrack; but the rest of the music is "The Last Man" off of the soundtrack he did to the movie "The Fountain."

  • Rishi Kaneria 5 months ago
Cheers! Yeah I don't get an astronomical number of comments on my videos so I don't see any reason why I can't or shouldn't give each person/comment 10-20 secs of my time to respond when they've given me a couple of minutes of their lives in watching my video. Seems like a more than fair trade to me :)

Wow. What an amazing comment to receive. I feel very lucky. Thank you for that. (For me it WAS profound - I dedicated it to my father passing away last December...the tone of the piece speaks to that very much...his passing is definitely an undercurrent in the film). Thanks again for watching.
