The first chapter of the Music Box Chronicles is a glimpse into the timeless life of Twinklebox, a music box caught in an infinite world, set to his own melody.

Written, Animated and Directed by Aaron Bradbury

Original Music by Richard Birkin timetravelopps.co.uk

Recorded by Robbie Newman at Snug Recording Co

Twinklebox is a short film about the mechanics and music of time. The third film from Luniere brings yet another lost toy back to life in an animation that plays with scale, sound, and timelessness. The Music Box Chronicles is an ongoing collaboration into the parallel development of image and sound, inspired by a ‘Write Your Own Melody’ Music Box.

Stunning, lovely jubbly. Worth the wait, can't wait for the next chronicle??
  • Aaron Bradbury plus 4 months ago
Next Chronicle on it's way soon. It's quite different, it'll be a stereoscopic explosion of colour. Keep your eyes peeled and ready for a workout.

I think we share some aesthetic sensibilities. I really enjoyed looking through your videos. Some similar stylistic ideas at work.

I just watched this over 10 times in a row.

The loop is a subtle element throughout the film, the circle of notes on the title, the music cylinder, the melody and the Möbius strip at the end. Perhaps you were subconsciously sucked into the loop. You were lucky to escape.

    I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Nice detailing! Can you tell what software used?
  • Aaron Bradbury plus 4 months ago
Here's a breakdown of the software used to make the film:

Autodesk 3ds Max for most 3D work (modelling, uv's, rigging, animation, lighting)

    Mental Ray for rendering.

Autodesk Mudbox for some texture painting.

Adobe Photoshop for texture work and title design.

    Adobe Premiere for editing.

Adobe after Effects for compositing, effects and grading.

Genarts Sapphire mainly for the lens blur effects.

Red Giant Magic Bullet Colorista was used on a couple of the internal shots.

Red Giant Trapcode Particular was used for the dust particles.

AVID Pro Tools for sound production and mixing.

Adobe Media Encoder for final encoding.

Hey, thanks for all the comments. It's great to hear such a positive response.

    Yeah, it looks awesome.

Do you know the differences between the genarts lenseffects and frischluft lenscare?
  • Aaron Bradbury plus 4 months ago
I had a go with the trial of the Frischluft dof effect after having trouble with edge artefacts using the Genarts Sapphire S_ZDefocus effect. I found that it produced similar results and artefacts as the Genarts Sapphire plugin. Both are very powerful tools though, far superior to the built-in lens blur effect in After Effects, including the recent CS5.5 'Camera Lens Blur' effect.

    well yep this is amazing...

The quality of the modelling and texturing is incredible. I just sat and gawped at this the entire time. Some shots look photo real. I loved the colour treatment, and the minimalist soundtrack.Overall very beautiful.
  • Aaron Bradbury plus 4 months ago
Thanks Daniel, I'm glad you enjoyed it, especially the colour treatment... I spent many hours tweaking the colours.

The concept is brilliant and the attention to detail in both the CG and sound design results in a very cohesive piece. Masterfully done.

I just read the comments on your Tumblr... I'm now trying to find the episode of Ulysses 31 in the dark corners of the internet, and exploring the myth of Sisyphus. Made me think of Mercer from Philip k Dick's Do Androids Dream of electric sheep, I'm sure he must be based on this myth and also (a little) of making Twinklebox: The word "sisyphean" means "endless and unavailing, as labor or a task". Anyway... Thanks for my internet adventure through cartoons and mythology.
