Sketch: Iron Filings
Modelling a changing magnetic field and displaying it using simulated 'iron filings'. This came about as a tangent to the development of a new installation to be launched in Feb. 2009. The calculation of the magnetic field is done on the GPU to keep things running quickly: this sketch runs at 30fps on my Mac. Depth-of-field effect added later in Final Cut.

11 months ago thanks. The code is very new and still a complete mess at the moment, but once it's in a format that might be interpretable, I'll find somewhere to post it. There's a GLSL shader for calculating the field, a lua script to call the drawing commands and a patcher to tie it all together, so there's a fair bit of organising to do... -

9 months ago The basic elements of this patch have been used as the basis as a part of our installation 'Waves' - vimeo.com/3351088 - we've added camera tracking combined with thermal imaging so that the magnetic charges that create the disturbance in the field of iron filings correspond to the position of people in the projection space.
