A funny, bitter-sweet Dogme film about six insecure, single and vulnerable people whose lives interweave one bleak Copenhagen winter when each signs up for an evening class in Italian.
Soon after arriving in the small, grey suburb, a substitute minister, Andreas is persuaded by the affable hotel receptionist Jørgen Mortensen, to sign up for Italian lessons.
At the class he meets a charming but clumsy pastry-shop assistant, Olympia, who suffers from her verbally-abusive father.
Olympia soon discovers that her fate is inextricably linked to that of Karen, an introverted hairdresser who patiently cares for her chronically-ill alcoholic mother. When Karen’s mother dies, the two meet at the funeral and discover that they are in fact sisters. Olympia begins to fall for Andreas, while Karen starts an affair with Halv-Finn, a handsome but arrogant restaurant manager. Fired from the restaurant, Halv-Finn takes over as teacher of the Italian class, which is soon joined by Giulia, his kitchen assistant from the restaurant. A native Italian, Giulia’s motive in joining the class becomes clear when she and Jørgen Mortensen fall hopelessly in love.
The Italian class is the catalyst for these single, insecure yet compassionate personalities to find love and each other in an authentic Italian way...
