I'm continually fascinated by the incredible formations of ice that a winter stream can produce. These intricate patterns change by the hour as water that has been super cooled collides and freezes to anything it touches. The river banks and rocks widen with the ice until it completely engulfs the water underneath.

This was shot with my Sony EX1 with Letus Extreme adapter and Nikon 35-70mm F-2.8 lens. IndiSlider used on a few shots. Music is called "Minor Blue" by David Darling. All the vignetting was added in post, I think it looks better that way! It is NOT from the Letus or Nikon lens.

Great, relaxing and beautiful footage. I'm not a big fan of the fake vignetting, though. It just looks too obvious in some of the shots...

Thanks Pixel Viking. I agree that on here a few shots look like its too much, but on a real TV with over scanning (like the one I use to edit with!) it looks milder because more of the edges are cropped.

beautiful! So this is time lapsed? How did you protect your camera from the cold?
  • Paul Frederick 11 months ago
Angel, None of this is timelapse. It's all real time. Though timelapse on ice build up would be super cool to do!

Ohhh it looked like it was timelapsed a bit :) how did you protect your camera from the cold?
  • Paul Frederick 11 months ago
I was only out in the cold for about 1 hour at a time. So it isn't a problem, the EX1 has been used by others in the extreme arctic cold, its very robust.

Very nice shots here. I missed the first big freeze in my neck of the woods, hoping another comes soon so I can go hunting some icy shapes. :)

I am happy to see another beautiful video from you.
I have always thought that your "Winter Solstice" is the best video I have ever seen here at Vimeo.
I find that "Winter Solstice" is still better than this one, for the combination of the image and the music, too.
But recently, I have finally found a video which I have to value more than your "Winter Solstice", also for the combination with the music.
Check this one out, if you would like.

An amazing piece of timelapse, with an original piano music, composed and played by himself, or herself.
It is a little bit long one, but I am sure that you won't be bored.

Some see aspects of life with their eyes, others with their brains.I think you're of the second type because when you see life through your brain you re-creat reality
& you really did.Your choice of music & your sight are deeper than reality.I can only say (I'm speechless)!!!!!

    Hi,
i love your works so much that i m always expecting the new ones ;)

i enjoyed the harmony of the soundtrack and the pictures but it was not complete for me; telling the truth, i missed the soothing tune of rippling water :(

i hope you appreciate my comment!

    regards, Nandy
  • Paul Frederick 10 months ago
Indeed Nandy! COuldn't agree with you more. As a matter of fact, sometimes I rush these out and once all my encoding was done, I too realized it was missing the stream sounds, I was going to add them back but it takes soooo long to re-encode that I just left them out. Since I use the Letus 35, the audio hums due to the vibrating Ground glass, so all audio such as the river sounds needs to be re-done in post from SFX cd's.

    Long answer...sorry!
