At 1 pm, a cannon is fired every day (except Sunday) from Edinburgh Castle:

Incidentally, you are standing directly in front of the entrance to the apartment building in which I stayed last summer (Grassmarket No. 1).
In this clip, SteveR was standing BEHIND the gun (which may explain why he never heard it). I will post my own clip of the one o'clock gun (and it's resounding report) soon.
