Oh, by the way, I thought I would mention that I made a new channel especially for videomusic!

thanks Karen :) I was watching some of your recent videos recently and thought you might like it. I love how Vimeo is making this community out of all these video artists. And yes, the "classical" video artists and curators and gallerists might think its not serious posting videos on Vimeo, but I would say they are just jealous.

This is ace! I use Vegas too, it does rock but this must have taken ages! Well done indeed!
  • Gabriel Shalom plus 10 months ago
Hey Jennifer thanks! Actually I probably spent no more than a week total editing/composing. But there were around 92 tracks altogether in the final Vegas file :)

    Das ist ein großer!

I used to grow my beard out and then shave it down into a different style every few days. It was fun. I took pictures, but never made anything cool like this.

    Loved it.

When I was a kid I always imagined how fun it would be to have a goatee, but honestly now I am not such a fan. People who know me always go "eewww!" during the section where I am sporting the mustache. Ha ha ha!

Thanks for the comment; glad you enjoyed it!

    just curious!

The Vimeo Unicorn makes all those decisions.

  • Gabriel Shalom plus 10 months ago
thanks for the "tra-damn!" :) what does the "tra" part mean?
  • Matthew Ballard 10 months ago
Hey, its just what came out. (for basic emphasis on the word "damn") :) I'm not aware if its a prefix. It should be.
  • Gabriel Shalom plus 10 months ago
Well I think "tra-damn" is awesome. Way to go on the creative slang! I am going to start saying that in honor of you. Seriously :)

although part of me wanted you to sing, "now i haaaave shaved my beeeeard" during the part after you'd shaved.

    sweetness.
  • Gabriel Shalom plus 10 months ago
Truth be told, there is footage of me saying "beardbox" but it seemed self evident when it got down to composing and editing so, alas, you'll just have to hear that part of the piece in your head ;)

    Thanks for the positive feedback!
  •
  • Kyle McDonald 10 months ago
    The time changes are amazing.
  • Gabriel Shalom plus 10 months ago
    Thanks Kyle!

Its something I do in live performance too but somehow its even more radical in the edit; also difficult to get the video editing software to support since the timeline only can be in one BPM/time signature at a time.
  • Kyle McDonald 10 months ago
I used Vegas for audio (primarily) and video editing for a few years, just because it's super fast to edit in. Now I'd probably use Live, since it has some video capability and a pretty intuitive/fast "arrangement" view.

Also, I'm thinking mainly of the change at 1:00 and 2:00. The straight -> swung -> 2/3 time is wonderful. I'd like to hear that more often :)
  • Gabriel Shalom plus 10 months ago
I would edit in Live but it seems pretty restrictive to have only one video track; did they change this in the latest version? (I have 6.0.7)

So far I have only found live acceptable for scoring. But I would really hope that in some not-too-distant future version Ableton would release some true AV sequencer.

For now I hear that the newest incarnation of Resolume should be the closest thing to what we'd all imagine as a fully capable "Ableton Live Video" -- but my friend Rob is a Beta tester and he said the Resolume product is disappointing. It seems it may be difficult to get clips to play outside of a BPM structure. This was also my biggest problem with the structure of VJamm.

Until some smart AV people develop some smart AV software, I guess I'll have to stick to the relatively dumb way I am doing this stuff. The potential with Vegas could end up being the fact that you can write scripts in Vegas using .Net from Microsoft. Unfortunately I have no idea how to program in .Net as my programming skills end with CSS and HTML... Do you know anyone with mad skills in .Net?

    - Gabriel
  • Kyle McDonald 9 months ago
Yeah the one video track thing is a pretty serious restriction. I've seen a lot of crazy stuff, though, so I imagine people use it less in a traditional way (i.e., laying out clips) and more non-traditionally (syncing video to audio triggers, and composing with something like MIDI).

As far as Resolume goes -- VDMX is in the same category and has a lot of video-follow-audio features.

I don't know any .net programmers :( At least, none that would want to write more .net than they already do at their day job.
  • Gabriel Shalom plus 9 months ago
The one-track restriction also points to the "mono-visual" nature of much videomusical work out there. Its an ambition of mine to begin working more with "poly-visual" audiovisuals so that the frame is disregarded for the "object". Music software trying to be AV software or VJ software trying to be multi-track will both fail until they orient themselves towards video objects instead of video frames.

I played around a bit using ArKaos to do a live videomusical component of a quartet a couple years ago; the documentation is here (currently working on getting a copy on Vimeo): gabrielshalom.com/suiteforingrid.htm

You might also find a recent blog post of mine interesting, where I talk more about the theory I have developed around these constraints. See: tinyurl.com/5d6ugy

I think I am going to make a craigslist post for .net programmers... I'll keep you posted on what happens!
  • Kyle McDonald 8 months ago
I finally had a chance to read over your quantinuity post. There are two thoughts that came to me very prominently:

1 "With more access to metadata our decisions will be better informed"... if decisions approach a level of being perfectly informed, I wonder if we will stop calling them decisions?

2 "split the pixel"... I read an interesting note on this idea recently: rosa-menkman.blogspot.com/2009/03/compress-process.html

I.e., glitch art:subpixel::nuclear science:subatomic. I know this isn't what you're getting at as far as hypercubist cinema goes, but I feel like it's another perspective that fits the same framework.

this is amazingly done. i did one myself a couple years ago, but never did anything with it. yours came out way better and way more interesting. very musical too.
  • Gabriel Shalom plus 10 months ago
Thanks for the kind words Sean. The truth is I also did this a couple years ago (the recording was done in 2006) but I didn't have the will to edit it until this January. Sometimes it takes an extra burst of inspiration to finish something.

guess what... movies are not new, story telling is not new, music videos are not new, beatboxing is not new... whats your point? everything has been done, but this is super cool and the guy put his own twist on it.
  • Gabriel Shalom plus 9 months ago
Hey Franck, thanks for the perspective!
See my reply to Erwin below.

I hate to say it, but originality is overrated. Its a conceit of the ego to think of ourselves as more than channels for creative expression. I have been beatboxing since I was in high school, and Lasse's videos were an inspiration to me to take it to another level.
  • Franck Deron plus 9 months ago
Yeah I feel you man.. I just don't get these people that come on here and have nothing better to say. Not that its a contest like you mentioned, but if Pedro is so original why doesn't he post up some of his own work... :)

...anyhow am looking forward to see more of your videos!
  •
  • Erwin 9 months ago
Does it have to be new to be cool?
    I liked it. A lot!
  • Gabriel Shalom plus 9 months ago
    Thanks for the support Erwin.

To clarify for anyone else reading this, I like Lasse's work and respect it too, but actually, I have been making these kinds of pieces since 2004, the first two being House and Small Room Tango.

    vimeo.com/1457527
    vimeo.com/1459613

More importantly, this is not a contest. Its a form of creative expression and there is infinite room for all to participate.
  •
  • no it doesn't... but i still like lasse's more... and it's more than 2 years old...

  • Gabe, this is really cool. Its an outgrowth of everything that I saw you were interested in at Bard College: beatboxing, video, music, VJing, ephemeral events and more. Well done. I have been working on some music videos recently and I feel like I've gotten an inside scoop and some cutting edge inspiration from both your videos.
