I used to grow my beard out and then shave it down into a different style every few days. It was fun. I took pictures, but never made anything cool like this.
Loved it.
Thanks for the comment; glad you enjoyed it!

although part of me wanted you to sing, "now i haaaave shaved my beeeeard" during the part after you'd shaved.
sweetness.
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Its something I do in live performance too but somehow its even more radical in the edit; also difficult to get the video editing software to support since the timeline only can be in one BPM/time signature at a time.
Also, I'm thinking mainly of the change at 1:00 and 2:00. The straight -> swung -> 2/3 time is wonderful. I'd like to hear that more often :)
So far I have only found live acceptable for scoring. But I would really hope that in some not-too-distant future version Ableton would release some true AV sequencer.
For now I hear that the newest incarnation of Resolume should be the closest thing to what we'd all imagine as a fully capable "Ableton Live Video" -- but my friend Rob is a Beta tester and he said the Resolume product is disappointing. It seems it may be difficult to get clips to play outside of a BPM structure. This was also my biggest problem with the structure of VJamm.
Until some smart AV people develop some smart AV software, I guess I'll have to stick to the relatively dumb way I am doing this stuff. The potential with Vegas could end up being the fact that you can write scripts in Vegas using .Net from Microsoft. Unfortunately I have no idea how to program in .Net as my programming skills end with CSS and HTML... Do you know anyone with mad skills in .Net?
- Gabriel
As far as Resolume goes -- VDMX is in the same category and has a lot of video-follow-audio features.
I don't know any .net programmers :( At least, none that would want to write more .net than they already do at their day job.
I played around a bit using ArKaos to do a live videomusical component of a quartet a couple years ago; the documentation is here (currently working on getting a copy on Vimeo): gabrielshalom.com/suiteforingrid.htm
You might also find a recent blog post of mine interesting, where I talk more about the theory I have developed around these constraints. See: tinyurl.com/5d6ugy
I think I am going to make a craigslist post for .net programmers... I'll keep you posted on what happens!
1 "With more access to metadata our decisions will be better informed"... if decisions approach a level of being perfectly informed, I wonder if we will stop calling them decisions?
2 "split the pixel"... I read an interesting note on this idea recently: rosa-menkman.blogspot.com/2009/03/compress-process.html
I.e., glitch art:subpixel::nuclear science:subatomic. I know this isn't what you're getting at as far as hypercubist cinema goes, but I feel like it's another perspective that fits the same framework.

I hate to say it, but originality is overrated. Its a conceit of the ego to think of ourselves as more than channels for creative expression. I have been beatboxing since I was in high school, and Lasse's videos were an inspiration to me to take it to another level.
...anyhow am looking forward to see more of your videos!
I liked it. A lot!
To clarify for anyone else reading this, I like Lasse's work and respect it too, but actually, I have been making these kinds of pieces since 2004, the first two being House and Small Room Tango.

More importantly, this is not a contest. Its a form of creative expression and there is infinite room for all to participate.
so creative work!!
Please keep me posted on your projects and give a shout if you're ever in Berlin!
