Does anyone know who this is? It was definitely filmed in Virginia Beach, VA.
  • Donald 5 months ago
The opening on the beach looks like right off the strip; running up the hill at the end looks like Mt. Trashmore.

Got to be Giavanni Ruffin, who was East Carolina's running back last year, and was from Virginia Beach, VA.

I dont think he was hating on the message. some of the those exercises are very dangerous if you're not a high-caliber athlete with professional trainers. ie rolling your shoulders with heavy weights; not recommended. dude is a beast and won't/ can't stop. it's very motivational for everyone - in life and in the gym.

My point stands. The message is great and all (I wasn't commenting on that) and the dude is a beast, but hey, bad form is bad form. He can get away with it, kids at home can't.

The gym exercises he does send out a mixed message; Box Jumps are spot on and have practical application, but I can imagine the makers of this video encouraged him to do Dumbbell Curls because it looks impressive to the public, when in reality it is a purely aesthetic exercise and shouldn't be found in any serious athlete's regimen.
  • Taylor Smith plus 5 months ago
Regardless the video was great, and besides if his form was off I guarantee he could still whoop your ass

As a tip to the owner of the video, I simply delete these types of threads to maintain a proper culture around my profile.

This is the equivalent of musicians standing in the back of the room, critiquing because they are inspired/jealous. Thats okay, but realize when you do it on the owners page, its like you have a megaphone and you are ruining the experience for people who are simply enjoying the inspirational work.

I coudlnt agree more with you, Benjamin.

The message is not the medium here - don't worry about the technical aspects - focus on the message.
  • Gary Huff plus 5 months ago
I'm sorry, but if they don't care enough about the medium they are presenting the message in, then why should I waste my time?
  • Taylor James plus 5 months ago
are you saying people shouldn't try to create unless they have the best possible equipment? You have to work with what you've got.
  • Kyle Stebbins 5 months ago
@Brad: Gary is right. If the medium does not carry the message appropriately, then why choose it? Why not scribble down notes on a pad, release an audio file, or author a powerpoint presentation? -- If the medium is not utilized to communicate the message sufficiently, then it is a waste of our time.

@Taylor: I agree. However, this was not a critique on EQUIPMENT, it was a critique on FORM. The rolling shutter caused a rubbery effect during swift pans... it could have been avoided by simply not moving the camera as such. The remedy would have been completely free, and would have added another layer of power to the piece by keeping us engaged.
  • David Bradbury 5 months ago
@Kyle and @Gary - You are complete and utter morons. I'd enjoy this presentation just as much on an old slide projector with the vocals being recorded onto a vinyl record. The message speaks far more than any medium and I honestly doubt you heard a single word that he said.
  • Gary Huff plus 5 months ago
Hey, David, glad you could justify your opinions on the subject by resorting to name calling and not offering anything of substance. Hope that continues to work out for you.
  • Alfredo Gayou 5 months ago
the audio is recorded from a youtube video of Eric Thomas, so I think here, the medium DOES matter

  • Brandon Shorey plus 5 months ago
This coming from a person with ONE video on vimeo which clearly you yourself didn't use a tripod for. Go on youtube.com and rip on videos there. We have no interest in your negativity towards ambitious people.
  • Daniel Caldwell 5 months ago
It's called constructive criticism, not negativity. I don't think anyone would dispute that a tripod or a steadicam would make this video much more watchable.
  • captainLAGER 5 months ago
I agree, a little camera shake is okay, but this was definitely too much. Impossible to watch in fullscreen.
  • Ryan Alexander plus 5 months ago
The use of an IS lens would've helped alot with those micro jiggles.
  • Omar 3 months ago
Actually (I'm def not an expert here) but the shaking kinda adds a personal appeal. With a tripod, I would've thought of Remember the Titans, Rudy or Coach Carter. But with the shaking I feel the guy working out.
    Its nice

Also, the editing of the music is very sloppy, especially around 4:12.
  • Ryan Alexander plus 5 months ago
    I noticed that too!! ahhh!!!
  • sushidub 5 months ago
for real...there was a building climatic portion to the music right around 4:12 that was instantly taken away due to sloppy editing. Great message tho. Where did that narration come from?

  • Subtracting 5 months ago
Is this what motivational speaking has come down to? I think every insomniac must agree with me that there aren't many things that are more detrimental than sleep deprivation. 'I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death' is a message only suitable for Nas albums.
  • Tyler Cook 5 months ago
Yeah I'm with you on this one. I understand the part about "You're going to have to sacrifice sleep to succeed." That is true. You will have to, but the video shows an athlete. Sleep and eating are pretty damn important to an athlete.

Seeing as you are a Vimeo Plus member, I would expect you to already know that Vimeo is a creative community that often critiques others' projects.

While the video has a good message, is inspirational, and is well constructed, there are some technical issues. The camera's rolling shutter causes a lot of "jello", for one. It's not out of place to give this criticism to the video's creator, especially with a community like Vimeo. Some people post videos on Vimeo just to receive that type of feedback!

This video hit the bullseye on a number of factors, but that doesn't mean this community shouldn't give some feedback so they can hit the bullseye on EVERY factor in the future.

Every time you make something, there is an opportunity to learn from it.
  • Tyler Nilson plus 5 months ago
Well articulated josh, I didn't think of that perspective on the matter.
  • James Franssen 5 months ago
I feel the rough quality of the video adds everything to the message. In fact, I figured it was done artistically to add to the emotion. I feel the video would have suffered if it were any more polished.

This is a great video, really inspiring and I love the hand held out of focus look, it makes it look more real and not a Nike ad.

My only gripe is the audio jump, you can fix that and replace this video without losing your views, likes and comments.

    Great work.

It is indeed explosions in the sky. The beginning of the video is a song called "Home" from the Friday Night Lights movie soundtrack. The second song is titled "Your Hand In Mind" and although this is an older song of theirs this version sounds like it is the one from the Friday Night Lights soundtrack as well.

I enjoyed the concept. I actually feel the video quality added to the experience, if it had been more polished it wouldn't have felt as driven as the subject in the video. The only thing I have to disagree with, concerning the motivational speech, is the idea that one should not sleep for days because one might miss an opportunity. Too many studies have shown that sleep is one of the most important mental nourishment there is. Suggesting that the loss of sleep will help in some way is ridiculous.

Credit should be given to the orator.

It's Eric "The Hip Hop Preacher" Thomas from Detroit, MI.

This is part of one of his motivational speeches he gave to students at Michigan State University.

okay everyone thats saying negative shit shut up. "saying not to sleep is not a good idea" shut the hell up. if it didnt inspire you, you will never be successful. this was a hell of a movie. i constantly was feeling shivers down my spine and the music and the speech fit in perfectly to the movie. so every stop being so negative, lifes about the positives. being successful is about being positive. so stop the hate.

This message has been around a good while (the audio portion) I remember seeing the speaker deliver this speech to a group of people a few years ago on Youtube or another site. Very interesting video for someone to pair it with and give it new legs since the message doesn't change.
  •
  • Demarcus Robinson 5 months ago
Also, people that are thinking the speaker literally means you should be awake for 72 hours are over thinking things. He's simply saying that when you're striving to reach a certain goal, many times you don't have the luxury to sleep 8 hours or however long. As everyone knows when you're actually pushing yourself & ripping and running around there will be nights where you have to push through and forgo part of your sleep. It's really part of life. Anyone that's even partly successful or has reached a point in there life where they feel somewhat happy has most likely missed out on some sleep at times. Comes with the territory. So please, stop with the "sleep deprivation" study references. He isn't saying, sleep is bad, if you stop sleeping you'll succeed. He's putting it to the individual to ask themselves are they willing to get up, grind and be tired to get to a certain place. Sort of like someone working their way through school. Job + School = high probability of not getting the recommended amount of sleep each night. When he's saying I don't go to sleep, or don't sleep, he's saying don't relax when you can be working. He's not advocating being a restless zombie. Staying up days in a row means napping here and there, instead of laying down for a solid 8 hours in a row. Don't take things so literal people. There are days you get proper sleep & days you want if you really want to get things done or get ahead of the competition.
