For those wondering about the workflow on this:
Elliott drew his characters on red construction paper and cut them out. He drew his background on white paper and glued his characters to it.
To record his narration, I just used the Voice Memo app on my iPhone.
I took photos of his finished art with my iPhone (keeping the characters glued to their backdrop - I didn't want to ruin his work) and emailed the full res photos to myself. I brought them into Photoshop and separated the characters from the background and made them separate layers, and touched up the color and lighting.
Then I brought the layered files into After Effects and animated it all manually with keyframes (with the exception of some wiggle expressions added to the characters to give them some fidgety life). I used a 3D Camera, but disabled depth of field, and just applied Fast Blur to layers in the immediate foreground or far into the background.
For the lava pit, I found a still image on google image search, cut it up into layers and distributed them across the z-plane to simulate depth, used keyframes with the liquify tool to make the lava "stir," and added some Action Essentials smoke.
With the crayon box, I filmed video on my iPhone of my hand holding a crayon box and moving it around, then I brought it into AE and rotobrushed the box, tracked its motion, then applied that motion to the wolf's arm. So the box itself is a video and the wolf arm is an animated still.
