On Saturday I shot my first wedding video with the Canon 5D Mark II. I had two bodies and several lenses. I used the 24-105 for some of the handheld stuff (when I was walking with the camera) but mostly shot with the 35 1.4 and the 85 1.2. The 35 was handheld and I had the 85 on a monopod with the three-pronged metal attachment, which makes it kind of like a free-standing mini tripod--I think it's a great combination of stability and mobility.

A friend of mine was shooting with standard camcorders, mics, lights, etc. so I got to enjoy the 5D II--low light performance continues to amaze!!

The wedding was at La Posada in Santa Fe.

Very, very cool look. What was your take on going handheld? Any tricks there? I like the monopod idea. We've also added the Mark II to our lineup and are looking forward to shooting some weddings with it soon.

Thanks! Handheld was a little tough, but I tried to brace myself against whatever I could find. Also, it helps to put the strap around your neck and pull the cam away from you so the strap is tight.

I like the quality of the 5D MKII. What did the client think?

Awesome again. I find that shooting in lower light has been a lot easier. The viewfinder is easier to see and you get to use more open apertures. I shot this weekend out on a sunny, windy day and it was very difficult. The camera insisted on F32 and I could hardly see the screen!
  • Vladimir Chaloupka plus 11 months ago
Yeah, this camera is made for low light.

Hi Vlad... this video is gorgeous! I'm so impressed with the quality of the shots. I've shot a few weddings w/the 5D now and am just not happy with the shakiness in the footage - even when I think I'm holding the cam REALLY steady, when I get it into the edit I'm horrified! I already use a monopod a lot w/my regular vid cam just because it's so heavy (Sony EX1) so I guess I'll have to do the same with this one. Have you found any workarounds to be able to control more of the cameras settings? I'll be putting the latest vid I shot with it on Vimeo later this week and you'll see a DEFINITE difference between yours and mine.

Thank you Julie! A monopod really helps--I've added the Bogen attachment, the 3 metal feet, that turns the monopod into sort of a mini tripod, it's a great combination of stability and mobility. When shooting handheld, I've found that having the strap around your neck and pulling the camera against it, away from you, as you shoot also helps.
Let me know when your video is online!

Really, this looks cool, and instead of all the other depth-of-field play videos with the 5DMII it has some sort of story.
    Thanks for sharing!

Great vid. What did you use for editing the video? Final Cut? Vegas? Avid?
