not much difference in design compared to Arri Alexa and Phantom Flex ;)
  • Krystian Gwizdak 5 months ago
Yup, my first though was about Phantom. However it is said, that it's prototype and it's design is going to change. It's going to be smaller and so.
Personally I like the screw holes all around, however yes, it's not beautiful, and even after rigging it and bundling with cables, it probably won't look much better ;)

Very interesting, I hope it comes out to shake this industry up. If you follow the sensor and processor industry, you can see the technology is here for affordable raw camera. But it is those big companies that are holding it. I can't see one technological industry where progress is so low or intentionally crippled by marketing. When 8bit codec are the norm for $ 5000 camera when in the photo world for 1/10th of the price you are using 12 bit raw files.

When you think the power of the little gh2. More so the 12 fps 24 megapixel Sony a77 throughput is the same as about 144 fps 2 k raw output. This tell you that with the hardware processing of the A77 with a 2k chip and you would easily get a 24 fps 2k raw cinema camera.

Pretty much the price of a RED Scarlet, right?
  • Gerardo Romero 5 months ago
Yeah, if the Scarlet ever comes out. It´s been on the "Coming Soon" stage for 2, almost 3 years now, and still nothing. People said that it was delayed because of the Japan earthquake, but I´m pretty sure that Red is just waiting on the specs that the 5D Mark III will have (late 2011, early 2012). I love the Red Scarlet concept, but dislike the insecurity that Red has towards Canon and competition.
Plus Red is letting even the best down, look how it failed Philip Bloom yesterday with his Red Epic. I´m sure his 5d MarkII has never done that!

  • Phil Arntz plus 5 months ago
Good point on the Scarlet, but regarding the Epic.. Shit happens. Only a firmware problem! They are fixing it for no cost, in an hour or so at Pinewood!
  • Arie van Dam plus 5 months ago
If you are shooting on a day that will cost you maybe ten or tens of thousends, fixing the problem for free, is the least of your problem... I shot a lot with Red.. qliemts sometimes want it or just shit happens... But reliability is not their strongest point.
If this Chinese is really reliable.... I want one! The layout and the way you achieve your settings look very very good! That sucks on a Red as well. This looks like a proper camera!

I want to see images from it. Interesting of course. But one of the ugliest camera bodies I've ever seen!!
  • Nikita Pavlov 5 months ago
    It's a demo piece.
  • seisend.six 5 months ago
On some other forum site I saw a developer speaking and he told that the camera will be smaller than this as it is just prototype for presentation.
  • Nino Leitner plus 5 months ago
Interesting, but what's the point then? We can't see images from it and the body isn't final? So there's really nothing to show, or am I being too negative?? :)

Obviously cutting some major corners... RED is barebones price while making profit to run as a company.. so this is made using the cheapest labor on earth.. and probably some human rights violations.. That is a hasty generalization... I know.. but mayvbe someone can convince me otherwise?

I am much more interested in this camera than I am in the RED... as many have shown RED cams are not true specs, and certainly NOT RAW... this is REAL Uncompressed TRUE 2K to every measure, like the Alexa... And EVEN better is the fact that it is TRUE RAW. .DNG is the best thing that has happened to cinema. IDK if any of you guys have worked with Ikonoskop footage? But it is truly life changing. Ive done a lot of work with ikonoskop RAW .dng files and it is mind blowing how easy the workflow is and how perfect you can make the footage as a colorist. Especially since you can run it through the tried and trued Adobe Camera Raw. I cannot wait for footage from this game changer to come out. This could hurt Arri, RED, and any other company making big money cameras that dont shoot .dng this might be the push that us "photographer/cinematographers" have been dying for.

It's ugly and so is some of the Panavision film cameras. I don't care about the cosmetics of a camera but more the quality. The issue is, these guys need some sponsors to get this camera into the markets. It's basically a few of my cousins sitting around trying to figure out how to make an Alexa and they did. They may not use prime parts but the machine works. 2k Raw DNG. Remember it's a computer with a censor and a lens. Any engineer willing to will figure how to build one. 8k, I'm buying 4 of them.

    Lets push the cinema boundaries,

the final design will be smaller, and the s16 and s8 versions are going to be show stoppers... dont know why everyone is tied up in how it looks... why do you care? are you afraid someone might judge you when itsa on your shoulder making beautiful images... you should all be learning the cinema .dng workflow because its the future... no more fake "raw" from companies. Dont get me wrong RED has changed everything in the cinema industry and they have all of my respect... but .dng is true RAW and makes for the best looking footage I an my colleagues have seen... If the Ikonoskop wasnt an arm and a leg and unrelliable as hell Id be all over it... lets see if these guys can do what the industry needs...

When this camera comes out it will be a dream come true for filmmakers of all sizes and shapes. I hope it comes out soon.

This just makes you wonder why is RED taking so long with their cameras... They have been talking the talk and have been promising Scarlet for ages and it looks like these guys in China are walking the walk.

When this comes out I will not even think about RED

    Cheers
  • Perry Wilson 5 months ago
same hear, there is a difference between anticipation and "I just dont care anymore" and RED has no understanding of those two... pretty pissed that jim posted on the REDUSER forum yesterday about a HUGE announcement and to be prepared to be up all night... Im thinking Scarlet... 4k people on line hitting refresh... he posts the new REDCINE editing program... GAY!!!!! close to 3k people let down hard... way to go...
  • Gabriel Winebrenner 5 months ago
Jim and Red were total dicks last night. Can't believe they did that. I am sleepy as hell today because of their arrogance and baiting.

  • Mike 5 months ago
We all new something like this was coming from China didn't we? Obviously early days. In regards to complaints about cosmetics who cares as long as it delivers QUALITY not just in image but also build & reliability. Give me a butt ugly camera that shoots high end files for $8,000 over a pretty thing that looks like its trying to be an Arri & shoots H264 anyday!

  • Dan Cortes Reel 5 months ago
That may be but you say that having not even used the thing. If the cam delivers on its promises bye bye RED.

Only time will tell as the markets begin to open up and democratic film technology competes.
  •
  • R.O. 5 months ago
We don't know yet whether it's shit or not. Russian technology was as crude looking as a medieval torture apparatus, but they put the first man in space. Also, their LOMO lenses - one of the best in the world. Chinese are much more efficient than Russians, in my opinion, so I'm willing to give them some benefit of doubt and do actually hope it's going to work. I don't care much about the looks of that thing. One big question is the sensor technology inside.
  •
  • Jean Daniel Villiers 5 months ago
They should have done some lovely 3d rendering every six month, so that they can deliver it three years late at twice to three time the price.
  •
  • Joe Trimmer 5 months ago
I don't see this as a competitor to the EPIC. Give me a break.
  • Amir Sharafeh 3 months ago
It's a competitor in a sense that MANY videographers will be satisfied to get this than the red if it pans out, and Red will lose many customers. There lies the competition.
  •
  • Dan Cortes Reel 5 months ago
Looks like competition is about to be fierce for RED’s market. Yes ugly cam but that’s not the point. I can see all the RED engineers laughing at this but Indie filmmaker/videographers are rubbing their hands together to see where this heads.

Its funny I think it will be very soon kids will be assembling, hacking their own cheap 2 and 4k cameras.

The sensors are mature. Look at an APS-C Nikon or Canon or m43 GH-2. The still quality is GREAT. It's just interfacing it with a computer that can handle the uncompressed bandwidth and debayer algarythms. Eveything is going top SSDs which are getting cheaper and cheaper each day.

I think it will not be very long before some kid cracks open a GH-2, taps the uncompressed signal off the sensor and builds the first DIY 4k camera. Probably with some NVidia card with CUDA and an Intel i7.
  • Ill Stefanó 5 months ago
Im pretty sure you're right. But seriously, i think people are taking this 4k and uncompressed too seriously. 5d mark ii seems to work pretty fine on the big screen... besides most of our indie films will never reach that big a screen...
But im happy about the progression in terms of the gh2, etc. because they just keep killing any reason to get a scarlet... and now RED has kept talking about it for three years without being modest in saying how great this camera will be and how it will make film making accessible to everyone. Guess what? canon did it, and now all the other manufacturers did it. Anyone who prefers a 2/3" 3k camera to a canon 5d mark ii form factor with a nice set of zeiss primes must be daft. Ten years later those lenses will still produce stunning images on your Super35 4k iPhone cam ;)
  •
  • brandpartners plus 5 months ago
WOW, if the images coming out of this thing is as it should be say good bye to RED. Also My waiting time for the Scarlet if just starting to go away. Thanks a CHINA.

Now people lets hope we can get this thing from China and not be restricted by IDIOTS like LightPannels.

I really can not find a single Human Reason why are the big companies preventing serious development of camera sensors... We all know the obvious answer of course, but its soooo hypocritical that I wanna cry... Big Cheers to China! Really hope the specs are fully true ;)
  •
  • Mike 5 months ago
Sure there are concerns about this product , do you really want to be running V1.1 of this thing on set or location? But one thing after decades (it feels like it anyway) of stagnant camera design by the big boys trying to preserve market share & price, the cmos chip has birthed an exciting period of camera development!
  •
  • Bob Gilles 5 months ago
Sure, it looks like something the Chinese Army designed, but if it looks good, my company will buy it. We were the first to shoot a National ad on the Canon 7D and people called us crazy.
  •
  • Why all this talk about the looks of a prototype? Do you need matching shoes and belt too? Is the RED any better looking, the're all just boxes after all. But without even a glimpse of an image, this is more vapourware as far as I'm concerned. Who reviews a camera without images? Even one still! I don't see a game changer just yet. I'd be very cautious before they got my $8K. Show me visuals, then we'll have something to comment about.

Very interest camera, I for one really like the look of the button/plug layout - it looks like it would be really simple and straightforward to operate.

It's a shame the SI-2K has never really taken off in a big way for digital cinema, because the interface on that camera is the best I've ever encountered.

Interface makes a huge difference to the actual use of any camera.
