10. The power of Avisynth
This example clip shows you how useful Avisynth can be to restore old 8mm films.

Please use the full download to see the clip as it should be, and I suggest to use ffdshow to see this Mpeg4 clip with decent gamma settings, like it should be.

This regular-8mm film was made in 1958 on Kodachrome. The author has used an anamorphic lens.

It was a quick and dirty (dry) transfer, the film needs more cleaning and a new wetgate transfer.

This clip is a compilation from 5 clips, so you will see the frame counter jumping....

Enjoy!

Fred.

    Hi Fred,

Really a fantastic result ! You are the King of 8mm DIY transfer.
What fluid do you use for your wetgate transfer ?

    Kind regards,
    Rob.

    Thank you Rob!

I'm using Castrol Techniclean AS58 for the wetgate fluid.

PS: Elvis is The King :)

Is the sharpening and gate weave removal AVIsynth as well? What did you use? It's really effective! I wonder if/when we'll see some of your restored footage on TV?

    Cheers,
    David.

    Hello David,

All post processing is done in one Avisynth script: degraining, sharpening, resizing, cropping, stabilizing, color correcting.

The script runs at 4fps on a fast computer. All parameters can be tweaked of cource.

    Fred,
Thx for sharing the script. I use Avisynth for some videos. Your script looks like a C program.

    Long live the King!

    Hi Freddy,
Just seen your new clips. These get more and more fantastic! I very much appreciate that you share your work and show these examples too...
I use Adobe After Effects a lot professionally, but haven't ever tried the script-based avisynth, I wonder if the processes you apply could equally be applied using AE, to achieve similar results albeit with a bit more user involvement required?
    Anyway, great work, thanks again
    chris from London.

    Hey Chris,

I do not know if AE has the same grain removing opportunities.. The Avisynth sharpening is very special too.

    Hi Freddy,
Great work you create really stunning results. I tried your scrip and also my film becomes great. Can you please explain me how i get just the procesed film without splitscreen and text?
    Thanks, Michael
  •
  • Freddy Van de Putte plus 2 years ago
    Hello Michael,

For this, you must return result1 instead of resultS1.
Result3 will return the clip without autowhite.

    Hello Freddy,
Thanks for the fast anwser. Im realy a dummy in the scripting stuf so i don't understand what you mean with return and what to do with result1 enz. Can you clear this out for me. Do i have to change a lot to get just the filtred video?

    Thnx Michael

    Hi freddy,
I stil have a question. I wan't the same result as the outcome of the oiginal scrip (clip on the right). When i change the script line at end into "return (result1)" or 2,3,4 the results are not so good as the original. the clip is shaking and in the original it is realy steady. Can you please tell me what i am doing wrong or what i should do to get the same result.
    Thx, Michael

Thank you all for the very kind words. But the real 'Kings' are the people who have made the Avisynth plugins. My results would not have been possible without these plugins.

Again, you can read more about the script and the people behind the plugins here:

    At your service :) ,

Wow, absolutely inspiring what you've done with 8mm. It's what you dream the medium could look like, still retains that same wonderful vintage feel, and yet so much more vivid than i've ever seen it.

As someone who has done quality control for film and television re-mastering at one of the big studios, let me just say your work looks AMAZING. The improvement in the dynamic range and color alone have me picking my jaw up off the floor!

You paid careful attention to the little details that add up to make the end result look very professional. It gives me great joy to see wonderful work such as this.
  • Thank you! (blushing)

This looks very close to cinema quality. Amazing work.

I understand Avisynth is a script file but I don't know what software is used to run the script? Can you tell us what you use to load the scrip file?
  • Hello Mike,

To run an Avisynth script you need.... Avisynth! (haha)
    A good way to start:
    avisynth.org

Then what, Fred? Download /install VirtualDub?
  •
  • Yes, get yourself a version of VDub. Vdub needs no installing. Then load an Avisynth script in VDub.

Please read the Avisynth/VirtualDub basics first, and start with a simple script, like I did. Soon you will get the 'feel' of Avisynth.

can u help me in this colour correction i need help .... what should me the fillter so i gett good colour correction .....Freddy Van de Putte plz help mee i m big fan of urs
  •
  • Hello Sonu,

Keep it simple: use Donald Crafts RGB filter for VirtualDub. This filter solves almost all color problems. You do not need my filmscript for this.

Incredibe, I'm going to start using VirtualDub after seeing these results. Good work Freddy!
