Inspired by scientific instrumentation, systems theory, and science fiction. OBSERVATIONS is stock footage of an imaginary phenomena.

technical: all images are the product of gl shaders + cinder and run real time. titling/editing done in after effects. no post processing effects were used.

This has one of the most unique look and feel I've seen in the digital age. Well observed!

the patterns and coloring on the sphere remind of robert hodgin's written images work secure.flickr.com/photos/flight404/4754595368/in/set-72157624402891120/ i really like the zoomed in parts with the triangles + lines.

robert hodgin's spheres continue to be an inspiration to me. and i think the zoomed in + triangles is one of my favorite happy accidents that came out a long the way

"OBSERVATIONS is stock footage of an imaginary phenomena". I've re-read that line so many times, and this still blows my mind.

great stuff, nik. you say this is real-time stuff, do you mean frames captured straight from the software with no post-processing, or the software runs at this framerate? if the latter, have you thought about letting people play with the phenomena you've created? e.g. making this interactive?

also, do you know semiconductor's work?

    specifically brilliant noise:

    you guys should chat...

thanks! yes, the frames are straight out of an app that I wrote that runs around 30 fps on my 2010 imac. I've definitely thought about releasing something interactive, though, I feel there would need be work more on some sort of compelling ludic component. Also, on the technical side of things, I'd like to optimize a bit more -- I know that I can get the same images using 1/6th the amount vertices, I just haven't worked out the kinks yet.

So long story short: yes! maybe in the future, stay tuned

As for Semiconductor, I'm a huge fan.

    thanks for the comment!
