50. Timelapsing Through Trinidad
Update: Nov. 5, 2011
WINNER OF MOST ORIGINAL FILM AWARD AT CHRONOS FILM FESTIVAL
chronosfilmfestival.com/

For 10 days in August 2011, my friend Anthony and I set out on an "epic" adventure to timelapse some of our homeland of Trinidad. The adventure was awesome... some of the TLs not so much... but hey it was literally all about the journey... and shooting a tremendous 25,000+ stills :)

I'll have more about our trials, tribulations, and triumphs up soon on my blog @ fuji27.wordpress.com/

I must confess that the music is definitely more epic than some of the clips. Still, hope you enjoy the vid :)

Kevin, great job. I love it. The opening shot is gorgeous. What were your settings around 1:00? The blurred cars in the city were great. Excellent job man. Can't wait to see more.
  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
Thanks Brian, I can't take credit for the opening shot, that was all my friend, Anthony's work :) It is super cool, really glad I was able to work with him on this project :)
For the city shot, I was shooting at a shutter speed of 1" at f/5.6 at ISO 640, the blur was manually moving the focus ring every few shots... didn't know how it would turn out until now :)
Yep looking forward to doing more soon.

Estupendo. Seré sincero. Vi los primeros 30 segundos y pensé que era un timelapse sencillo. Me equivoqué.

    Great video Kevin.
I'm also doing a timelapse video and I'll use an epic music to so I don't think there is a type of music specifically for this type of videos.
I'm using the Lumix GH2, but it's my first test with the camara. So the results probably won't be as great as yours. If you have some advice to me on how using the GH2 I I was grateful.
  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
Thanks Ricardo, The GH2 is actually my friend Anthony's. I was very impressed with it, the lens are light and feel like plastic, but the images are great. we used some Canon glass on it as well, which allowed for the 1000mm zoom in one of the vid shots.
The best advice in general is to practice, practice, practice :)
  • Ricardo de Sousa 5 months ago
Can you tell me if he shot with the cinema mode 24 fps or with other mode?
  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
I believe Anthony shot it at 24fps and we sped up the footage :)

Fantastic! what an epic adventure that must have been :)
  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
Thanks Greg, it really was one. To think that I have lived there all my life and never done that. Rediscovering the homeland was amazing in itself :)
  • Travizeo plus 5 months ago
It's great when you get to see, and show people, a new side of your country. We were lucky enough to have a job in Antigua recently so we shot a few TL's there as well. I am a big fan of good ol Cumulonimbus :) the video is on my page if your interested vimeo.com/24674129
keep up the great work Kevin!

  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
Thanks Zack, I am glad this makes you want to go, there's so much to film down there :) Can't wait to do more myself!
  • Zack McGowan 5 months ago
yeah! im doing the same type of stuff that your doing with the timelapse and the HDSLR video, i just got a Kessler slider, and it works wonders, just have to get the motor now
  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
Awesome, Kessler gear is rock solid, which slider did you get? Once u have the elektra drive and oracle you're in for a tonne of timelapse fun :)
  •
  • Claire&Max plus 5 months ago
    Kevin, excellent work, bravo!!
What did u use for manage the differences of light at 0:50?
Really fan from 1:15 to 1:40, the illusion was perfect!!
And how long sleeping per night?? ;-)
  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
    Thanks Guys,
I did a first pass on the images using LR Timelapse ( lrtimelapse.com/ ) but still found the flicker to be a bit gnarly, so after I finished the edit, I sent it through After Effects and used GBS Deflicker ( granitebaysoftware.com ), which did a much better at deflickering the clip at 0:50 :)
Yep the statue scenes are my favorite as well. Surprisingly we got atleast 5 hours a night rest :)
  •
  • Mark Walczak 5 months ago
This, indeed, is EPIC! Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful homeland with us! Could you go into a little more detail regarding the deflickering process? This is currently my biggest problem with timelapses...
  • Mark Walczak 5 months ago
Never mind, looks like you responded to the above comment while I was watching the video :-)
  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
Hahah thanks Mark, your comments are most appreciated :)
Yep I think LR Timelapse is great cause it's free and it usually works well, but for some clips it just didn't work. GBS Deflicker is US$100 but it really cleaned the clips up, still some flicker, but I didn't play around much with all the options.
  • Mark Walczak 5 months ago
Nice! I'll have to check out LR Timelapse as well. Currently, I'm using MSU Deflicker for VirtualDub, which works pretty well. Again, though, I haven't gotten too deep in the settings yet. Thanks for the reply! Your work is very inspiring!
  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
Cool, yep I am pretty happy with the GBS Deflicker, Thanks again :)

Great work Kevin! I'm about to begin a timelapse journey through Nepal and Tibet in the Himalayas. Very inspiring work. Kinda wish I had a few more toys with me... ;)
  • Kevin Huggins plus 5 months ago
    Thanks :)
The toys do help I would admit, but I also like the simplicity of shooting the sky and letting the stars move for themselves :)
Definitely like my Kessler Gear, but there are tonnes you can do creatively in post :)

That's so awesome, enjoy the journey in Nepal and Tibet. Can't wait to see what you come up with ;)
