What do you see that makes you pity Donovan? He's written about that 1965 party, and seems okay with it. independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/bob-dylan-a-meeting-of-minds-507887.html

I think Donovan hit his peak after this-- 1966-67, and then fizzled into hippie silliness. I've wondered if Dylan bruised his ego and weakened his songwriting, but if so it couldn't have been this early.

Dylan sometimes made a joke about Donovan hiding in the closet in the Talking WW3 Blues lyric. I thought he'd been more withering somewhere but can't find it.

In another clip from the movie, Donovan sings Dylan a song that sounds way too derivative of Dylan, but he did lots of wonderful original stuff later.

It's that expression. He just looks so...uncomfortable.

Maybe it's the cameras. I dunno.

In other news. Holy crap. Jorn Barger. Hey. I've read your stuff since Christ was a corporal.

Well I only just discovered Twitter/hotdogsladies, and am _bereft_ that you're backing off-- you filled a JackHandey-sized hole.

That's how Vimeo got me to log in and post a comment here.

Also. I hate that John Mayer and Nickleback are in the same category in ANYTHING.

    Oh. And you sujck.

I really prefer this format over Twitter. The hair is a value-add.

Free speech vs. hate language . Some language amounts to yelling THEATER in a crowded fire... Not sure why these are your best examples of free speech, but wail on if you must.
  • Merlin Mann plus 10 months ago
    Perfect. But you misspelled "suck."
  • MidSeaMom 10 months ago
pretty sure my comment contained no suck-age.
Hypothetical: I answer the door of my house and you say that you think I might be a fat whore--and you hate Black people. I'm a nice person, but I'd kick ur ass off my porch, for sure, and you'd never get access again, see?

Your sincerity is very distracting, I feel like I know what your role is when you are just being sarcastic internet guy. But I kinda feel like you aren't trying so hard to be funny in this video, it's oddly uncomfortable because you are saying sincere things in an almost sarcastic way. Also, I keep hearing the word "subjunctive" I wonder... ah en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subjunctive - it's such a satisfying word, it feels good in my mouth.

For the record, Nickleback is a local band around here. Everyone I've talked to who's met Chad Kroeger has described him as an arrogant, ignorant asshole. Even if he is Canadian.
  • Merlin Mann plus 10 months ago
Seriously. You have no idea what a relief this is. Thanks.

Really, I'm just saying your douche-dar is well tuned.

I've been silently following most of your stuff for a while now, and this sort of rambling dump of what's on your mind is refreshing. Maybe it's an effect of a sort of celebrity glow -- somehow I feel I could cross you in the street and comment on stuff. Still, it's cool and interesting to the point I've started a sort of annoying emulation of your project, sans any audience (or approachable language).
Anyway, not important. Hope you keep doing this. Cheers.

Really enjoyed this one, it was a scene.

    Speaking of scenes:
    INT. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
An adorable 6-year-old girl stands before her classmates, next to a messy haired, unshaven man wearing what might be mistaken by some to be his pajamas.

ELEANOR: Hi, everyone, this is, uh, my dad. And his job is moving email around and making stuff on the internet. Also, dick jokes.

*snif* they grow up so fast...

Are you rehearsing those last frames of each of these videos? Such spectacular freeze frames, I can actually see the knowledge leaking out of your eyeballs.

+3 for Sloan, -1 for Molson = +2 overall. Good job.

As a quick aside, my favourite Sloan track is "Underwhelmed" from 1992: ca.youtube.com/watch?v=3RHf07SA3vg

Dylan: The Donovan thing is from "Don't Look Back"

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dont_Look_Back

The smackdown was pure primate politics, the documentary captures Dylan at his amphetamine best as he is morphing from the folk to rock scenes. Everyone in the UK keeps telling him about Donovan, so when he gets to meet the poor guy Dylan is out for blood.

The whole film is worth checking out.

Only show I've ever been to where the band came out to the lobby beforehand and was super polite and awesome to the fans?

My hand to God, it was the Barenaked Ladies.
  • Merlin Mann plus 10 months ago
    Oh, man. SO cool.

Frickin' Canada. How do you not LOVE Canada?

a while back (a year and change), I remember you mentioned that Sloan were your fav band on Macbreak weekly. I loved them back in the day, but figured I wouldn't now (10 years later). So after you mentioned that, I plugged in Twice Removed for the first time in forever and was shocked to find out how much I liked it. I thought it would be like the Dukes of Hazzard or something where it was the coolest thing as a kid but as an adult is the dumbest thing ever. But not so. I've been listening to them consistently for the last year. Twice Removed is still my fav.
