This soapbox speech came from exasperating conversations I have had with lawyers, journalists and scholars who argue that social networking profiles are public. The argument goes that the person with a social networking profile faces the same pitfalls and damages as a celebrity- as well as a convenient loss of personal privacy. I don't agree: based on a historical perspective, the nuanced protections afforded to celebrities, like PR and message control.
