Flame cultivation is nothing new but few use it. This video is 1 of 3 showing various uses of flame torches against weeds on cranberry bogs.
Open flame -- A long wand with a cylindrical bell at the end. Intensity is controlled by a squeeze valve that regulates gas flow. Can generate up to 100,000 BTU and working temps over 1000°C
Infrared - The enclosed flame is projected onto a rectangular ceramic plate which provides radiant heat output up to 2500 BTU
Infrared with Spike - The enclosed flame is projected onto a round ceramic plate which provides radiant heat output up to 2500 BTU. A metal spike is attached to the metal cone that contains the ceramic plate. This spike is used to pierce the crown of the weed and can potentially damage the roots of the plant in addition to the above ground plant parts.
This particular torch is designed for use with small herbaceous weeds like dandelions. A larger torch with a longer spike intended for larger weeds found on cranberry bogs is under development.
