The original (public domain) movie is based on the 1954 novel "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson, made famous by the 1968 George Romero movie "Night of the Living Dead", as well as the 2007 Will Smith movie of the same name. The screenplay of this great movie was also worked on by Richard Matheson, but he was unhappy with the result, so used a pseudonym in the credits. However, many consider this as one of Vincent Price's best films.

In this story, Vincent Price played Dr Morgan, the only survivor of a plague that has wiped out the human race, including his wife and young daughter. The only ones left are vampiric zombies who try to kill him nightly, though he easily out-smarts and over-powers them. Morgan leads a sad existence, but one day he meets a young woman named Ruth, who seems to spark some hope in him. She appears healthy, but it turns out, she is part of an infected, more intelligent group that has learned how to better control their disease. They succeed in ultimately killing Morgan. As he dies, his last lines are basically that he is "the last man." Too late, Ruth runs up to him as he is dying as says "They didn't know" what a good person he was.

The original ran 86 minutes. This version is 18 minutes.
