Rewarding Teachers:Issues and Opportunities (30 Aug 2011)
Dr Amanda Bell was appointed Principal of Brisbane Girls Grammar School in January, 2002. Her professional background in education and arts management has developed through wide experience in teaching, management and leadership roles in both schools and art galleries in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia.
Dr Bell’s doctoral studies combined her deep interests in girls’ education and Australian art with a commitment to profiling the achievements of women.
Dr Bell is a Director of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia, Trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art and is Deputy Chair of the Advisory Board of the Australian Centre for Child, Youth, Culture & Well-Being at the University of Technology in Sydney. She is a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators, Australian Institute of Management and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
In 2007 Dr Bell was a state finalist in the Telstra Business Women’s and won a National Leadership Award in Music Education. She also won an Australian Government Award for Quality Schooling for Excellence as a Principal in 2008 and in 2011 was nominated by the Queensland Government’s Office for Women for inclusion in their 100 Years of Women’s Achievements register for her leadership in education.
As Principal of Girls Grammar, Dr Bell is committed to achieving a high-challenge learning environment for both students and staff — one where intellectual endeavour and empathy lead to active participation in the school community and society generally. Encouraging and mentoring young women is a personal preoccupation, commencing with the students in her care and extending to wider alumni and corporate networks in Brisbane and beyond.
