3. Real Scenes: Berlin
For the third edition of Real Scenes, RA and Bench go to one of the most special places for electronic music in the world: Berlin. When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, techno became the underground soundtrack to the reunion between East and West. In recent years, it's become an international destination for ravers—a cheap place to party with clubs that are renowned throughout the world.

Techno has become a business in the meantime. Yet Berlin still maintains a credibility that other cities lack. To understand why, RA and Bench went to the German capital eager to find out about its unique history and the reasons behind its continued relevance.

great story! I feel that the role of drugs with techno is completely left out here, but that might take too much attention. Unfortunately it can't be avoided when you're near techno.
  • Matthias Lachmund 5 months ago
drugs are heavily connected to all kinds of cultural, musical and religious events. so what was your point?
  • robertanderson plus 5 months ago
I find it mostly related to techno, that explains why parties go on for days.
  • Matthias Lachmund 5 months ago
yeah, and that's exactly what made techno (and berlin) what it is today. i don't think anything related to drug problematics has a place in this nice series since it is supposed to show the different scenes of different parts of the world and notgeneralizing on some well known subject.
  • Alternative Silence 5 months ago
Totally agree! , i think the same, i see the exposure of diferent scenes about the music, but always sad to relate drugs with music scenes. Enjoi without see the other side of the coin. =)
  • robertanderson plus 5 months ago
It's good though to have a positive video on the subject though.
  • Alternative Silence 5 months ago
Well I guess the videos is to see some focus on how the scene works a little and yes it is good to see, do not need the negative part video because it looks from the street to ... anywhere and is not one thing we have to learn in a video because you see these things since childhood, at least in my city:), and a video about it I think it is overpriced mainly because today (especially kids) do not look that fun. but equally I think people who are in this world is more professional face and see something we do not know or have not seen either live there or no reason whatsoever. I hope that I did not spread far, but equally (though not the case in this series of videos RA) is not bad to have a personal view.

I was expecting Scuba and Appleblim to be interviewed.
  • Matthias Lachmund 5 months ago
    why? this is about berlin
  • Vikrant Dev 5 months ago
well, as far as I know Scuba and Shackleton (not Appleblim :P) have made Berlin their second home...that is why they have become the purveyor of the techno - dubstep axis which is has been causing hell lotta mutations in the dubstep scene in the UK especially. Check out any of their recent releases/mixes to know that. Of course more and more producers, not just in the UK, are taking notice and embedding it in their work .
  • Matthias Lachmund 5 months ago
yeah, a lot of international producers and djs have become residents in berlin, but the berlin dubstep movement is quite small and so the artists don't get much attention here...they wouldn't fit in this documentary because all people interviewed where kind of contemporary witnesses and creators of the whole change and movement in the last 20 years in berlin. it's a difference if you just participate or are really creating and changeing something here in berlin.

    I really like your perspective.
I am not a Berliner, but I feel like I am one.
I feel deeply connected to Hip Hop culture which have had its roots emerged through crisis and conflicts, useless to say it came up with Love too.
I love Techno and the whole spirit that goes along.
I also understand Berliners and Berliners alike when they feel frustrated seeing all those waves of unfamiliar tourists. And at the meantime, it seems to be an open minded world...
Eventually, I don't know if I'm part of the family, but what I know is that I want to protect the honest vibes that emanate from all music and cultural movements, eventhough market has the power to absorb almost everything.
    Keep it real homies.

Awesome documentary, love seeing the faces behind Watergate.
And great to see Dixon in there, he still is one of my favorite dj's considering his amazing track selection and ninja-like mixing skills.

Will visit Berlin in October, can't wait to be back there!

really nice documentary, just sad, that you forgot to interview some women. there lots of good female DJs supporting this special feeling here.
  • Resident Advisor plus 5 months ago
Hi Cris, thanks for your kind words. We're profoundly aware of the lack of female perspective in our film. Our shoot time was very limited in Berlin and we lost out on some planned interviews due to unavailability. What we did get ended up being cut from the final edit. We were keen that our inclusion of women didn't come across as tokenistic, and there were interviews both male & female that did not make the final cut.

What a FABULOUS film....loved it. I visited Berlin for 3 weeks in the early 90's...and stayed 12 YEARS! Honestly, the BEST city in the world. I had Tresor as my living room, having never missed a saturday/sunday for 2 years at one point. I remember going in there one Saturday night, stayed in there for the Sunday morning session, where after 7am it was free entry,so you got everyone coming in from other clubs that had closed...stayed all day and was still in there at 10pm on the Sunday night when they opened the doors again...they let us all stay, wasn't any bother...just a great time. Heartfelt thanks for this film x
