Good little story and well shot.

I think we can all relate. Not me, of course, but probably most other people.

Thanks Blake! I really enjoyed "Far From Now," awesome shots of my favorite 80's looking subways, those orange seats on the BDF or 123. Great.

  • Ruben Timmerman plus 5 months ago
...I may be mistaken but I thought there was some discontinuity at 2:34 and other sections that threw off the way the conversation flowed.

Don't get me wrong I thought the film as a whole was fantastic! but we are also here to suggest and constructively criticize, correct? This may have very well been intended though and I misunderstood. let me know!

    Great work either way! :)
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 5 months ago
Ruben! You are correct my friend. I am taking a class this semester with Sam Pollard (main editor for Spike Lee "25th Hour" "Four Little Girls" etc.), and he says "Performance ALWAYS trumps continuity. Don't let bad continuity get in the way of a good performance." So I followed his advice and I'm glad I did :)

I love it when indie films like this one are dipped in Hollywood. The characters, titles, credits, and the song at the end. Great work.
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 4 months ago
Thanks Paper Plane! The song is called "Resolution of One" by a great NYC based band called Gaurds. They were nice enough to let me use it in the film, I'm all about good songs over credits. Check them out!

Thanks FOURREEL, the neon motel sign offered great natural light and the alexa captured the soft red tones nicely.

After re-lighting the cigarette, she delivers her lines so well and he is also the right actor for the role. It does begin with a disturbing feeling but ends with a catharsis. It is just as every good art should be! I am looking forward to seeing next work!

So nice of you to say Takeshi, we appreciate the review!

Saw this in LA for CMF, this film definitely stuck out to me as the best. Loved catching it on the Vimeo HD Channel, can't wait to see what you come out with next!
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 4 months ago
Thanks Aymann! I sadly couldn't make it to CMF this year because I was in Prague so I'm really happy to hear from someone who went. You have a nice multifaceted reel, I got mad love for editors and graphic folk cuz my dad is a post man!

  • Chase Schiefer 4 months ago
Was this shot in Leonardo, NJ?? That looks awfully similar to Rt. 36. And I could sear that was a Middletown Police car that passed during the credits. This is right down the street from me!
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 4 months ago
Yes it was! What a crazy coincidence. They were really nice and accommodating, it's such a beautiful traditional vintage motel.

Wow, you use Alexas at school? This is remarkable, great story telling and cinematography!
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 4 months ago
Thanks Bellographix! This was actually made outside of school with the support of my amazing team and the genius of my producers and cinematographer. I wish we had access to Alexas at NYU!

I like your promos, you are great with after effects. Good luck with saving up for that red, good idea!

I'm currently in high school, an arts one which I attend for film. I'm actually in film class right now. I decided to search NYU on vimeo. Really happy I did. Good Job!
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 3 months ago
Thanks Anna, it's awesome that your high school offers a film class. The foreign film class I took my Junior year in High School changed my life--an eye opening introduction to polanski, vertov, godard, bazin, truffaut, eisenstein, & forman. Have fun!

love the shot at 00:29 and in the tub.

you were allowed to shoot on the arri alexa for the campus movie festival? I was under the impression that everyone has to shoot with the camera that they provide you with.
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 3 months ago
Thanks Rachel! The bathtub shot was hard, had the alexa at an almost 90 degree angle above a tub of water ooph! Thank God for my extra careful and super ballsy crew.

You can shoot on any camera you want, they do give you a package (computer, tripod, and camera) which gives everyone a chance--I think the point is so that people can't blame their lack of equipment for not participating. But you can shoot on whatever you want and edit on whatever you want. It just starts everyone out right, it's a cool idea.
  • htat htut plus 3 months ago
Great story! So lucky to be able to shoot on Alexa. Wondering what kind of lenses you guys used...
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 2 months ago
Thanks Htat! We shot on the cooke S4/i lenses.

I love this short. After having watched it many times, I noticed that she "changes" the hand she uses to smoke between the end of the shot at 2.28 (left h) and the beginning of the shot at 2.29 (right h) then left again... but, as I previously wrote to you, it's on my favourite "love and the like" vimeo album. :)

    great stuff!!!!
the sLOG footage from the ALEXA looks like it hasnt been color-graded at all!! can you please tell me if thats the case?
    thanks!!
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 2 months ago
thanks illdog, your stuff is super ill. I like your style.
You are correct, it was a choice I made and I stand by it, some will beg to differ but because of the mysterious time period of the short (mix of the 60's and 90's), I love the sLog look.
  • illdog plus 2 months ago
thanks... vimeo is just for tests and few other stuff for me, advertisment world doesnt really let me share my stuff ...
it looks good ungraded! it s been my personal quest latelly to do as much as possible in-camera and let go of heavy color grading so i totally understand!!
i watched the short again and since im a photo whore i need to make a little critisism on the fact that in some moments it looks like the codec has crushed!! guess its not a problem of the original footage since i cant really think how little light u gotta have for the alexa to freak out like that, guess it s an encoding thing...
i love the allaround feel of the short! im gonna go see the rest of your stuff now!! :)

I love when a short film is not that disturbing weird must-be-art but a lovely story with a motivating end. Keep that!
  • Rylee Jean Ebsen plus 1 month ago
Thanks Christian! If it affects people in any way, then I am happy. Keep up your good work!
