'When what you see is not what you get'
The 2D version of the 3D short film by Alexei Popogrebsky.
We used the opportunity to test some concepts in 3D and see how it would translate to 2D, and vice versa. Originally part of the Experiment 5ive omnibus -- 5gum.ru . (Hence the black envelope with the picture inside, which had to be the common element of all 5 films)

Watch the 3D Anaglyph version here vimeo.com/28852133 (you would need those cardboard red-cyan glasses for that).
Side-by-Side 3D version for viewing on 3D monitors with shutter glasses: youtube.com/watch?v=WM61NL4HJK4&hd=1

Featuring Grigory Dobrygin and Ina-Maria Jaich
Photography by Peter Steuger; Production design by Erwin Prib; Art Direction and SFX by Niels Müller; Costume Design by Petra Wellenstein; Music by Dmitry Katkhanov; Stereography by Sarah Rotter; Editing by Vladimir Krug; Sound by Dmitri Batyzhev; Shot on Arri Alexas and Stereotec 3D rig; Postproduction by Pictorion das werk; Produced by METRAFILMS

'Bonne Annee' written and performed by Marie-Aude Robin and Dmitry Katkhanov

Very nice, I love it !
And well done, in regard to the zoom into or out of picture frames. I know what it is to compensate a camera move and smoothly bring another one (I had to do that in Matrix Reloaded).
Very nice short, again, bravo !

Hi Alexei, what a nice surprise to see two chairs of mine in your fantastic work!!! Compliments..., Stefan
  • Alexei Popogrebsky plus 5 months ago
Ha-ha! I loved them! They were perfect for playing around the 2D/3D impressions. After long and thorough 'casting', we literally had to hunt them down from all across Germany. I think, one had to come from Munich, one from Cologne. And there is even a stunt chair - we made a mockup back for the shot when he falls over.
  • Stefan Diez plus 5 months ago
sorry for that, you should have called...
    all the best
  • Alexei Popogrebsky plus 5 months ago
No problem! It all worked out, as you see. It was just that your chairs were sold out in Berlin just before we were ready to take them :)

I like it so much without it being in 3D I think that would ruin it.
  • Alexei Popogrebsky plus 5 months ago
Thanks, but I certainly hope you are mistaken. This is one of the rare cases when a film was WRITTEN, built and shot specifically for 3D, using the extra dimension illusion as a storytelling tool. The test for me was how much it would lose if being only 2D. Luckily, it seems that it still works. But there are a few storytelling things that work in 3D only (like what happens to the polaroid pic). You might check for yourself here: vimeo.com/28852133

(And BTW there were more things like that planned, but we were already WAY out of our postproduction budget).

Mesmerising! What a brilliant idea I thought to myself when I saw the photo he held. Wish this happened to me. :D
  • Alexei Popogrebsky plus 5 months ago
Thanks. Though have to admit the protagonist's picture thing was the common element all five shorts in the Experiment 5ive project had to play around. But I think in this film it comes with a twist (especially in the 3D version).

  • Alexei Popogrebsky plus 5 months ago
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trompe-l%27œil
My Own Private Idaho (1991, Keanu Reeves на обложке Queer!)
  • Yegor Lymarev 5 months ago

  • Alexei Popogrebsky plus 5 months ago
