The Winston Churchill Upper Athletic field is the first thing you see when you drive onto the middle school campus.
It is used sparingly, but that will change soon: Come spring 2012, the muddy, spotty, brown and grassy field will be the go-to place for competitive soccer.
Over the summer, the Carmichael Soccer Club renovated the field. The club uses many San Juan Unified fields on different campuses throughout the district.
"It's our commitment to the community and to the district to do what we can to keep these fields up," Carmichael Soccer Club President Paul Ioanidis said.
The club consists of kids from all ages, mostly from San Juan schools. They have about 800 members that represent about 650 families in the Carmichael area.
