As I walked through the crowd I thought to myself, "if the auto show does not have space for the people, what will the roads be like?" On April 28, 2008 Beijing hosted what was billed as one of the world's largest auto shows. Tens of thousands of eager middle-class Chinese people crowded into each exhibition to gawk at the foreign cars and provacatively clad foreign models. Amongst the American, European and Japanese cars were domestic Chinese models. Some of the Chinese cars were blatant copies of Western models like a Chinese version of the Hummer. Bugatti, Aston Martin, and Ferrari were marketing a luxurious lifestyle. But amongst the crowd, blaring rap songs, and dazzling lights one needs to ask if a congested city of 17 million people could sustainably develop with 17 million smog emitting cars on the road? From the pushing and shoving crowd present, I don't Beijing can.
