Tonight, 28th August 2007, there was a full lunar eclipse. This is when the moon paths directly into the Earth's shadow. The suns light, refracts around the atmosphere of the earth (filters out the blue, but allows the red past) casting a red glow on the moon, making it look 'blood red'

Enjoy the time lapse!

are we effectivly seeing the heat signature of the earth as in infra red radiation....?

Not quite. It's more like shining a light through a prism to get a rainbow - except with this it's the sunlight shining through the earth's atmosphere, and when the moon is in total eclipse only the red light is bent round enough to land on the moon - the blue light (along with most of the other colours) doesn't bend round quite enough to land on the moon, so disappears into space.

Awesome! I wanted to see it in person but it happened at like 5 am and I had to get up at 8.

Cool, good work capturing it. I didn't know there was a lunar eclipse - although actually was it just in the southern hemisphere? Nice pictures though. The music reminded me a bit of 'A clockwork orange'!

It was supposed to be visible from my area in the Northern hemisphere too...Minnesota, USA, but we had a very heavy thunderstorm and nothing was visible except rain and lightning

I didn't know about it either.

No-one told me about this, either.

I've just checked, and apparently it happened between 8:50-12:24am GMT. This obviously means that we wouldn't be able to see it.

Very nice. It happened here around 5 am, and I only got to see it about an hour later when it was really faded.
