During the summer of 2011, a group of multimedia artists spent 25 days hiking the 219 mile long John Muir Trail. The intent was to capture their experience on the trail and bring it back to the general public in the form of a gallery exhibit including photographs, video installations and hands-on displays that allow visitors to truly get a feeling for the beauty and majesty of the trail without the burning lungs and blisters. Alongside the exhibit will be a feature length documentary chronicling their adventures on the trail.

This is the first glimpse into their epic journey, accompanied by the single, ALMOST THERE by Opus Orange.

We shot on both the D7000 & the 5DMII, though this particular video is about 75% D7000. The D7000 is more comparable to the Canon 7D in terms of the frame size, but ultimately it comes down to the quality of lenses. Thanks for watching! There are more to come.

Evolution Valley was incredible. We're going to be releasing a short piece about two artists (a brother and sister) we met on the trail. Their interviews and b-roll were shot at Evolution Lake...it was an epic background. So glad you enjoyed. Thanks!

In camera? No, we didn't. Would you recommend that? The time lapse footage (shot on the D3s) obviously looks MUCH more crisp due to the fact that it's built by larger JPEGs.

Wow, this is very inspiring! I can't wait to see the whole thing! My brother and I shot something similar for the Everest Base Camp hike in Nepal, but it was only two of us. Next time we'll have to shoot time lapse, bring a pocket dolly and better audio equipment!

Thanks! Day #156 and counting! I was with three hikers breaking on the side of the trail in Palisade Creek Canyon when you guys passed us. Two of the girls I was breaking with were southbound JMTers and mentioned who you were and your project. There's one thing to hike 220 miles, but 220 miles with all that video gear? LOVE IT!! Fellow Californian here...

Not to get wrapped around the axle about gear, what tripod/head are you using? I have a Gitzo 0-series which stands about 4 foot 6 with Really Right Stuff BH25 head and works great for backpacking (weighs in at 1 lb 15 oz) ... would it be enough to support the Pocket Dolly?

Or are you just using the Pocket Dolly feet?

I'll have to let Jason answer the question about the tripod head, but because we opted for a light weight tripod, it was tough to keep the dolly steady on it. Most shots I have the dolly mounted on rocks, trees, snow, etc. If you're interested, one of our blog entries is on the dolly:

Come to think of it, the feet might be smart (if you don't mind packing the extra weight). There were a lot of times when being on uneven ground meant a rock in the middle of the range of the dolly would bump the slider.
