This is a compilation of some footage shot during a shake down of a new ruggedised and ultra portable stereoscopic camera rig. The footage was shot in the Black Mountains of Wales and on the Welsh coast near Porthcawl. The camera rig uses a pair of XDCAM EX cameras in a side by side configuration and allows for very quick setup and easy toe-in (convergence) adjustment plus the convergence can be slaved to the focus. This year I will be using this rig to film further installments of the "Elemental project" (www.elementalproject.com) in 3D. We will be travelling ot the Arctic, Iceland, chasing tornadoes and hurricanes.

The video is presented here as an Anaglyph for ease of distribution.

Ok, you have made me run around my house trying to find a pair of 3D glasses. I know I saw a pair a few weeks ago in a junk box I had, but I cleaned it all away. I'll report back once I've found them!

a mistake I made (and I'm sure others will too) is trying to make the video as big as possible. I played it full screen on a 40" monitor and it didn't look as 3-d as I hoped.

I found if I DON"T play it fullscreen and actually sit back from my 19" screen, it suddenly looks VERY 3-d, you can see all the subtle changes in depth very good.

    Great job!

I think thats because the compression artifacts take over when you make it too big. The original 1920x1080 file plays very well full screen with great 3D. The reduced color space of H264 doesn't help the Anaglyph encoding either.

Hi Alister. Can you point me to the rig you're using? Or did you made it?
    Thanks

I made the rig myself out of ali box section, some manfrotto mounts and a few machined parts. It's quite basic but very ridged and easy to adjust.

How much convergence do you use?? I thought convergence was usually manual/mechanical, but I can't picture your method if you able to slave it to the focus. Mind sharing more??
