decided to do a test to see how these cams handle video noise with various levels of gain and without gain applied.

please note that no custom presets or picture profiles were used here. if you know what you are doing and applied these parameters, the results may be significantly surprisingly different.

camcorders today allow you all these various parameters to manipulate eg, black compress, black stretch, black gamma, cinematone, knee, curves, color etc. the skilled video practitioner will be able to master his own personal settings to even minimize video noise, saturate colors as well as produce an awesome quality despite of the posted results shown here.

i guess the trick for most of these camcorders is dependant on what the user finds more important. brightness of image or cleaner darker with lesser video noise. some technlogies are superior when it comes to boosting gain and keeping video noise minimally visible.

Yes, the Z1 does seem to be significantly better, and oh dear, the XH-A1 is perhaps the worst. Now, Derek, how about doing the same thing with the 5D2? THAT would be interesting.

will try to do that when i have some time...and actually the XH-A1 may not perform well in a default level but the custom presets do allow you to tweak the noise level to a suprisingly level which may outperform some of the cams seen here.

I'd REALLY love to see a HMC-150 thrown in there! Now that would be COOL!

also i guess on the ex1 and 3 you have more settings so that you could over power the z1 at any time or not?

well to be fair these were done at default settings and of course with the right settings depending on your knowledge cams like the Z5,EX3 .XH-A1 do give you more options to manipulate with RGBs, MATRIX,KNEE,BLACK SET,Saturation to obtain superior results.

A bit late, but would like to say that I love the underestimated Z1 ;)

i think the reason the Z1 was so brutally pushed down in the market is because of simply the HDV format.. People started disliking HDV... There was the start for full HD on camcorders. I have used the Z1 and i liked using it, but HDV Files are more difficult to work with in post production then full resolution HD. I think sony did that to then self... bringing out the EX1 for only a thousand dollars more and a bit. With 1/2 inch lens, 24p, over-cranking and all that... people just spend the extra penny to have some more futures on there cam. Well, lets look around, maybe we see people drooping them for cheap and dont really know what they are so good for, than we can pick them up and use them for low light stuff.
