We visited Josh Vogel of Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co. in late 2010 and kick started this year with a feature on the wood sculptor based in Kingston, New York. Our experience with him was so profound that we knew we had to pay another visit. This time, to document his story as part of our series. The result is nothing like we've ever done. This film gives little background on who Josh Vogel is, read our feature for more details. Instead it explores the idea that turning wood is a reductive process that in essence is a step back in time. As the wood loses a layer, the years are taken away. This abstract idea is a constant that Josh is very aware whenever his chisel touches the bark and steady peels away the rings of time. thescoutmag.com

This is my favorite Scout documentary so far. Powerful to say the least.

Sorry for the brief outage. I replaced the old file with a full 720p file to give a little HD love. Will be back up in 5 minutes.

This was such an enjoyable journey through Josh's philosophy! These videos keep getting better and better, and I love that you didn't bother to go backwards in Josh's life, well done!

    Well done! I like it.
    Made with DSRL camera?
  • Ed David plus 5 months ago
Made with the Sony F3 recording to the Nanoflash. Lenses used were Zeiss ZF lenses. Used a steadicam pilot for the woods stuff. It was raining that day that made steadicam work difficult, but because it was raining it made for a great saturation to occur in the woods.

we also lost a nanoflash in the rain. may it rest in peace.

In this day and age of plunging 401ks, unemployment, congressional tug-of-wars, war, greed, hatred, etc, your video has a most refreshing settledness to it. It's Zen-like. It's so nice to see someone relaxed and at peace with right where they are. There is hope for us all if we look in the right places. This is instructive.

    Splendid work!

Yes, a very nice film. I liked the score too. It ended far too soon, and I wanted to see more.
  • Brennan Stasiewicz plus 5 months ago
that was something i struggled with...how it should end. overall, i wanted the pace to keep getting progressively faster, less patient, and harder to hold on to. but even so, i felt myself trying to fight my own direction. haha. but then, ultimately, that would have betrayed the purpose of the piece a little bit. i wanted it to end in a way that the viewer felt a sense of loss but would be ok with it...before he or she moved on to the next web video. ;)

but man, my conversation with Josh yielded so many wonderful moments it was hard to narrow it down.

This video (along with your others) have been truly inspirational. It was this kind of work that initially pushed me to pursue film as a hobby, and now as a creative outlet.

Thanks for doing this, I will be watching for more work to come.

I'm so happy to hear this. Film is such a exciting way to explore the world - to explore light, people, and feelings. Brennan and Tom are both extremely talented people and I am honored whenever they ask me to shoot another installment of the Scout's series.

That was really good. Great pace and so well executed in every way. I work in metal myself and enjoy making parts that will most likely outlast us all. Still i admire this guy for prefering the opposite.

stunning work. Glad there's a new Video of the Scout. Watched the Mast Brothers at least 10 times.
Loved the grading, the contrasty forest and of course the details and the message. Would love to see more of your work. Q: what lights did you use and how did you set them up for the interview? just curious
  • Ed David plus 5 months ago
used a joker 800 hmi shooting thru a lot of frames of diffusion for the key light - a litepanels 1x1 for the back light and a diva 400 as a background light. We were hurting on time. it's basically the whole lighting scheme for the whole workshop scene and even if I remember correctly for the first and last shot - Josh's over the shoulder and CU looking at the wood.

    thanks
    ed

“Trees are a little bit more stoic about their approach to life, I think. than we are… that we worry about these things. I mean, that’s why I was saying.. rather than personify a tree it’s more about like what aspect of the trees in us? It’s much more fundamental than worrying about eternity. It’s living, you know. And I think that that’s a great lesson.”
