For the 2008 Cal state Downhill #3 I have hours of footage in HD resolution, to keep the picture quality up and the file size down I am creating 3 videos each with a unique approach. This video mainly focuses on a section with a rock drop, and a steep banked turn. Visually I think it it one of the Better sections of the course. Some of the shots in this video give you an idea of the elevation and how much the race course drops over a very short distance. As you will see in the next two videos there is a good deal of pedaling at SouthRidge Park. This video is of both practice and race.

I would also like to thank Dale Hernandez and Mike Hernandez for providing me with helmet cam footage on the practice days! Mike's crash on helmet cam is great you can view it at the end of the video along with 2 other crashes.

I thought that was pretty nice editing along with good footage. The effects were ok also. The beginning credits I really liked...great way to start your topic. Why not use some slow-motion also? Quite enjoyable to watch!

thank you andrew! the past couple days i've been really missing mtn biking! not a whole lotta riding going on in michigan this time of year. I enjoyed watching this. can't wait for 2 and 3 of this set!

I don't know a lot about this sport. Do they get to ride the track slowly before racing down it or are they just that good at making quick decisions?
  • Andrew Waldron plus 10 months ago
The day prior to the race is a practice day for the riders. I was there also practicing this was the first video I went to shoot. During practice runs riders stop and review difficult sections, and different routes through those sections. Many times you will see riders spending most of there practice day at a few sections. and less time than you may imagine doing complete runs.

This is probably the best mtb video I have ever seen (I don't care for the free style, hucking professional ones).
Very good jorb and I especially liked the effects of the opening creds and also the crash sequence.
  • Andrew Waldron plus 10 months ago
Thank you Pete I actually do like those videos the difference for me is this is more like the news, it is just what hapend other than putting a helmet cam on my friends helmet I just shot what I could and missed some great stuff and shot some boring stuff. The intentionally produced videos look great but the but they really are very different.

kinda went over the top w/ the effects imo
  • Andrew Waldron plus 10 months ago
I can see that but I really like effects! That said now that the first one is done I think that the open is way too long it is 30 sec for a 3min video but it is the open for all three videos so the next one you see you will not see that and some people did enjoy it!

awesome video. i don't mind the effects at all. and the music was great. especially the 'old film' type of effect, that was nicely put in and i think it fits the vibe on fontana perfectly.
  • Andrew Waldron plus 10 months ago
    Thanks Adam!

Whoa, easy on the effects there. The odd quick clip, high lighted by the song is fine. Having a large amount them rather randomly just hurts. It is fine for you as you edited it all together and have seen the full clips. So you know whats is going on in every shot. For the end user, it just hurts. Same thing for the yellow over tone. Use it to high light moments. Imagine reading over someone else's school notes where every other work was high lighted. It is great to keep your videos busy with quick editing. But there needs to be some balance. Over all you have the right idea for some great editing. I like the starting and the filming is very good I'd say. Time to check your other two vids.

    Thank you Tom,
I am working on the 2nd video from Fontana right now and it does have longer shots, it also has some fast cuts. These guys are moving fast! I am very awe at how fast they are. When I ride I consider myself lucky to have got down the trail in one piece.

I started a channel called vimeo.com/mtb would anyone like to help moderate it ?

  • Josef Duller 9 months ago
Not bad Andrew. I do think the effects were overdone and jump cuts could have been made at better times. Tom Lynch (above) sums up my issues with the film pretty well. Has lots of potential though.

hey andrew, i saw the post for this video over at MTBhub.com and thought i would leave a few comments here as well. i am a videographer and photographer myself, so i think i can provide some useful suggestions.

one of the things i noticed is that many of your shots are really short and the cuts are too quick. i am a fan of straight cuts and i think you worked with your music effectively, but some of them are just way too short. as for the effects, it might be a little overdone, but i do like the very beginning up until the 00:06 mark. i don't believe the stenciled look is helping your piece much and kinda makes it cheesy in my opinion. personally, i'd like to see more of the desaturated stuff like you have before the 00:06 mark.

also, i don't mind the title effects, but i do think they drag on for too long. try tightening that up a bit. as for you filming techniques, i like your choice of angles and how you switch from static shots to panning ones.

the end effects are actually pretty nice in my opinion. i think they work well with the pace of your soundtrack and add an interesting element to the video.

overall, i think it's a good start and look forward to seeing some of your other videos.

Anthony thank you I really appreciate your insight and well thought out input. I wanted the video to have a fast pace. I also wanted it to be abrupt. I think in the cuts I went to far with that. The generally theme of most feedback is that this video is hard to watch, one guy even said it gave him a headach, another said it gave him a siezure.
The Titles were a lot of work but way to much for this video I see that now! They are also very long for a short video. thanks

  • Andres Fernandez 9 months ago
What kind of effect is that on the opening?
  •
  • Andrew Waldron plus 9 months ago
I used after effects. The tracing was done with a blur filter set very high. the color is a combination of a radial gradient, glow, and blending modes, the rings are masks with both vegas, and scatter. The text is a directonal blur and the color is set supper brite white but shifted to red. The key is to process in 32 bit 16, or 8 will not cut it

  • Andres Fernandez 9 months ago
Very nice i just don't get the tracing part. How did you get the footage to look like white outlines? Very interesting look...
  •
  • Andrew Waldron plus 9 months ago
The tracing is from a blur filter in after effects. That has an edge blur I do not remeber the name of the blur but if you play with the blurs it is there it is not a plug-in it comes with Cs3
  •
  • Andres Fernandez 9 months ago
Thanks i will try to get closely to the same result you got just for fun i like the tracing look a lot.
  •
  • Andrew Waldron plus 9 months ago
Smart blur crank up the threshold I set it as high as 70 on some clips

That was a very good quality film. The filming was excellent for race footage, and the song fit the video, and the riders were very good.
For the most part i thought the editing was good and worked well with the video, but the ending editing with the colour changing and the picture moving up and down was a bit difficult to keep your attention to the riding, while it looked cool, I think it would look better if it were the background, to say... the credits, or somthing along those lines, because the focus is already slightly away from the riding, and prominant credits or text, or even possibly narraration, would bring the focus to somthing, making it seem less jumbled (probably not the best word to use, but i can't think of a better one).
Just some critcism, but not to take away from your video, cause it was very well done and props to the hard work.

Nice work bud. Don't be afraid to put some slow motion in there, especially if you are shooting progressive 60p. It would be a good way to break it up a bit.
    Nice work.
