Footage taken on a quick trip down to the lower south west region of Western Australia. We stayed at Hamelin Bay. A little place consisting of a caravan park and a boat ramp. It is central to some of the most beautiful parts of the South West although can be a bit cold even in summer as you can see.

All footage was shot with the Canon 5D mk2 and a 85mm f1.2 canon lens. That was because my brother was hogging all the other lenses we own. Saved wasting time changing lenses. Music is from "Passion" by Peter Gabriel.

Hope you like it.

That's really nice, Michael. The 5D2 is certainly proving a match for the dedicated vid cams; this was impressive footage.

Cheers Greg. It's a great camera but has limitations just as dedicated video cameras have but if you exploit its strengths wow!!!!

Wow, how did you manage to keep the lens open that wide? My 85 1.2 won't allow me to shoot with aperture that wide in broad daylight. As you can not focus with twisted/locked 85mm lens as it can not manually focus then. But as I see you didn't do any focus racks of handheld stuff can I assume you locked your focus, set the aperture and twisted the lens to shoot with wide apertures like 1.4 to 2.8? Let us now.

You guessed it Tonis. Hope I dont stuff up my camera. Can use neutral density filters to drop the light and open up the aperture but add grain to the footage.

  • Steve Muskie 10 months ago
This is very enjoyable. I would not have guessed that you had only one lens available to shoot it. The music fits well with it.

  • Ashley Harrison 10 months ago
This was great! And adding on to Tonis's comment I actually liked that the focus was locked. I sometimes get annoyed when every other shot the focus is pulled/pushed. Just my opinion.

    Beautiful colors!

Don't forget to add the tags "HD" and "5D" so more people find it and view it.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 10 months ago
Thanks for the tip Eugenia. After checking I realised that I was not entering my tags correctly into the computer so none of my vids had tags. I have fixed that now.

Great work Michael...I love the camera as well and look forward to more manual control...awesome score by the way...where do you get your music?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 10 months ago
It's all music I have listened too over the years. Just go through my old CD's and pick whatever suites.

Breath taking footage and music. Was this color corrected?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 10 months ago
Slight tweaking with saturation and contrasts but generally it's straight from the camera.

Did you use any filter to get the lens wide open?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 10 months ago
No filters adds too much noise/grain. Used the old twisted lens trick.

Question about the audio -I find that audio recorded by the itty bitty mike on the camera is yucky. Did you use an external source? Great footage....
  • Michael Fletcher plus 10 months ago
Sorry to blow the illusion Bill but sound was faked using Soundtrack Pro effects. Haven't tried an external mic yet but that will come. Thanks for watching.

Great video, look forward to seeing some more. I have had some fun using a Leica R series lens on mine for full aperture control and have read of a lot of people playing with Nikon lenses one theirs. Mark

Cheers Mark. We are thinking of using some carl zeiss glass. I'm scared I'm going to break it if I keep detaching the lens.

Beautiful Michael, your framing is excellent, and in all this piece is very inspiring. The light balance is bang on too, so you haven't used any ND filter on this? Did you turn down the exposure by a notch at all? Also, is the vignetting on the lighthouse natural? I agree with the earlier comments, I am happy to see a piece with no focus change, just nice "motiongraphy" ( I am now proud of inventing a new word to describe photography in motion :-)
    Cheers
  •
  • Michael Fletcher plus 10 months ago
"motionography" I like it. No ND filters. Exposures where set bang on the middle according to the camera but may of dropped it back a little on some of the lighthouse scenes due to the bright cloud action. Vignetting was done in FCP to add some mood. I hate focus pulling I always stuff it up. It's best to concentrate on what your good at. Thanks for watching Philippe.

    great work
i would like to get your adivse about the hyberd Vid/still shot cameras ( Nikon D90 & Canon 5D MarII). I think it might limit the movement when shooting in Vid by looking in the view finder and holding a heavy device. Isn't it better to have two cameras one for still ( D-SLR) and one for Vid ( like the sony HD)?
Thanks and i really liked the transition between the slides
  • Michael Fletcher plus 10 months ago
Hi Fahad. I dont know about the D90 but the 5DMK2 has a 3" lcd display on the back of it and it is better than any screens I have seen on any dedicated Video Cameras. It has 5x and 10x magnification for perfect focus. You dont look through the view finder so it gives you the same flexibility as any video camera. Thanks for watching.

That was pure art, very visually pleasing , but more than that it had cohesive feel with the music and the sounds ,excellent work ! Is this something that you set out and plan to do, Or do you arrive at this as you are putting all the pieces together ?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 10 months ago
Thanks Craig for watching and enjoying. I sometimes go out with a preconceived idea as to what i'm going to do but in this case I put together what I had and tried to give it some emotion with sound effects and a haunting piece of music. Sometimes it works sometimes its just crap. I'll be posting some more stuff soon. Stay tuned.

Congrats and thanks for posting !

No ND filters for not adding grain, OK. But...

...why didn't you try a method like this one (instead twisting the lens) :

  • Owen Tanner 5 months ago
Looks great, been trying to pin down what it is about the 'style' that makes it so pleasing to the eye. the lack of rack focusing makes everything more like a still image and gives you time to take it in. I think that rack focusing is an over used effect with the shallow depth of field these cameras let you achieve. Nice to see something without this. Gives the pictures more depth, better than following a subject and it always being in focus as your eye tends to follow that and not concentrate on the composition.
