An Inflammatory Breast Cancer survivor, Valerie grew up in North Carolina with five brothers and six sisters. Growing up with alcoholic parents, Valerie dedicated her time towards basketball and religion during her youth. She now works at a school and sees life differently after her double mastectomy, realizing the importance of “being mentally, spiritually and physically healthy.” She now sees her life “as being happier and more joyful” and grows from the support of her husband Keith and child Penny. In regards to her cancer, “I can encourage others to fight and not to lose hope. That’s the most important thing – to not be helpless.”
