An abstract concept informs this mournful and melancholy short - well shot with contemplative pacing.

  • Vinegar Hill pro 5 months ago
Haha! what would we do with it?
  • Mohit Deshpande 5 months ago
Nah. You don't always need a tripod. Videos shot without a tripod give a real cool effect if shot properly! That's exactly what was done in this video. Really amazing!!!

what is that look called? or filter? the grading is very soft with light grain but colors are still really natural looking. kinda looks like a smoke screen, i love it.
  • Vinegar Hill pro 5 months ago
The color was graded beautifully on SCRATCH by Allan Stallard. With the digital shots we pushed for the look we got with the film stock. We used a package called CINEGRAIN for a natural grain pattern. We would have loved to have shot the entire thing 16mm but our budget was too tight!

Great film!! I love low contrast movie style.. Did You use technicolor picture style on your Canon 7D?
  •
  • Michael J. Hartnett plus 5 months ago
Thanks man glad you liked it!

After testing the panavision cinestyle I found that while yielding slightly more latitude, because of the heavy compression native to the 7D, it "baked-in" a low contrast look that was more destructive than helpful.

To not get too technical, aquiring a low contrast image for color grading is really only useful when shooting with low/uncompressed formats.

To get the best image possible with DSLRs the best advice I know is to shoot as close to how you want the final image to look. Do as much as you can in-camera, H.264 compression doesn't hold up to very much manipulation even after transcoding to prores 422.

  • SMART LAB 5 months ago
Thanks for reply! I saw your other movies and I'm very imprest your works.. I'm not very experienced filmmaker and I need few advice.

Should I transcode H.264 to prores 442 if i working with adobe premiere cs5.5? I use colorista II to color graded but I'm not satisfied with effect. Colors in your works are very "milky/smoke style" and very natural. How to get this effect? I was working on technicolor picture style on my 5D with LUD file but final effect was very gray without live colors. Did You decrease saturation on your 7D picture style? Did You warm up middle lights and/or hight lights in this movie?

thanks for help and good luck with your next productions.

I think the outcome of this film is the epitome of filmmaking: having every aspect involved in creating a film — from beautiful cinematography, to pristine editing and coloring, stunning art direction, to indulging sound — to its absolute prime perfection.

Thank you, Vinegar Hill, for the brilliancy of The Cosmonaut.

Did you use Smoke to fake the grain on the 7D shots?
  • Michael J. Hartnett plus 1 month ago
We tried a few different grain generating/matching software solutions and settled on CineGrain. They scan a wide variety of film stocks that you can overlay on your footage and look really good.
