Re-uploaded- the first version had too much compression.
This is done in Quartz Composer, and the idea was that I wanted to achieve shadows and a focal/depth of field effect, which are two things that can be elusive in Quartz Composer.
The crux of it, is that you have a fairly standard typography/sprite with lighting setup that has motion automated. This is then in a render in image, where v002 zoom blur goes to the main image of a billboard, and the direct output of the render in image is used as a mask. The amount and x origin of the blur are interpolated to create a shadow.
This is then put in another render in image, with another layer of v002 zoom blur to create a kind of focal / depth of field effect, the idea being that a zoom blur with some coordinate options, yields areas that do not have blur... so it "should" give the effect of depth and realism, in the sense that peripheral vision works.
