From holding the line on the football field to holding a flyer during half time, Danielle Phillips is not the ordinary high school athlete. Go, fight, win has been Danielle’s attitude for the past two years. She spent her sophomore year playing junior varsity football and as a junior she is now a varsity cheerleader. Danielle is a base for the cheer team this year, her athleticism helps her to make sure the flier is secure and in the air at the right time. She also got to be a part of the numerous victories over summer for the cheer team at camp. Though her goal isn’t to stop at summer victories, she has more in store for this year. “My goal for cheer leading this year is to take me and my squad to competition and win all divisions,” Phillips said.
“My sister was a cheerleader and I still wanted to be a part of football so I decided to be a cheerleader to still support my football brothers,” Phillips said. Danielle watched her sister come home and practice routines each day and saw the happiness and fun her sister showed. So when football season arrived, Danielle took the opportunity and became a cheerleader instead of continuing her football career. The similarities between the two sports in her view are how they keep you fit and the schools requirements to play the sports. While the differences are a harder football conditioning but needing to have facials to cheer. She likes the ease of cheering compared to the pace of football. Another advantage Danielle saw in being a cheerleader was getting to spend more time with her girl friends.
Although Danielle sees all these advantages to being a cheerleader, making her decision involves taking both years into consideration. Whether she continues to cheer or goes back to playing football, she will always be close to her family of brothers and sisters. In the end, Danielle knows how she wants the rest of her high school sports career to go. She plans to go back to her football “brothers” and take them to an OIA or state championship after leaving her cheer “sisters” with a championship of their own.
