This timelapse is about a year in the making. I started sometime in June of 2010 and finished it on August 19, 2011. It wasn't constant work of course, just working on it every now and then. I'd estimate I have invested anywhere between 250 and 300 hours on it. Most of this was time I spent walking, biking, or riding the bus to locations I was shooting. There are very few locations I used a car to get to. Total frame count is about 28,000 frames and 85 different shots. All the frames weren't used in the final product as I edited down the clips. You will notice that some of the shots were shaky. San Francisco is a very windy city and even my heavy tripod couldn't remain still. In hindsight I should have bought a different head. All photos were shot in JPEG and then some light editing in Lightroom. Compiled into .mov clips in Quicktime Pro and then all brought together in Final Cut Pro.

I started this project because there are so many people photographing the city that I wanted to capture it in a different way that most were not. Between the time I started and the time I finished, timelapses have become huge. It's amazing to see what fellow artists can make with even the most basic equipment.

Gear-

it's so much work, but you can be proud of the result. The locations are amazing. Very well done. I also like the music choise. Maybe one suggestion: A ND-Filter for the timelapses at the daytime would give your footage a nice motion, like in the night.

Great Video! How long took the batch processing of the individual scenes? What kind of software did you use to put all the frames together?
  • WTK Photography plus 4 months ago
Batch processing was easy for the most part. Edit the first photo a little (tone, color, and cloning out dust spots) then auto synch the rest of the photos. Check them out to see if they look good and export. Used QT Pro to compile all the scenes with different framerates. Used 12, 15, 24, and 30 frames per second.
  • jo.weber 4 months ago
Thank you for your information. The editing process was clear but due to the huge amount of frames I was wondering that it must take hours to auto synch them, not? Did you shoot raw files? What was the time between each shot? 5 seconds or something?
  • WTK Photography plus 4 months ago
Like I said in the video description, shot JPEG. All shots were shot at 1 or 2 second intervals.
  • Awesome TL. Thanks for sharing your shooting intervals! I was going to ask the same question. You should pick up an Emotimo panning TL head. They guy that makes them is based in San Francisco. I am looking to pick one up. More info here. emotimo.com/

Very good work!!! I can't wait to get back there! This takes me back a little!

Could some of the shake be due to Image Stabilization or is it all from wind?? I found that same effect occurs on my little P&S when I have IS on...
  • WTK Photography plus 4 months ago
Mainly the wind. Also shot on some surfaces, like bridges, walkways, that shake from people walking on them. The wind easily moves that big 70-200 pretty easily, sometimes I had cardbaord to block the wind. The tripod head was also one of those pistol grip heads, not the most stable.

Awesome! FYI - there's a timelapse, stop motion film festival coming up Nov 3-5 - first one ever! chronosfilmfestival.com
  • WTK Photography plus 4 months ago
Thanks, and I am very interested in that festival. I just need permission to use the music or find new music. Only way I could find to contact Boards of Canada was sending a message on YouTube, hopefully they get it.

Love your site by the way, been following for a while.

Great work! I'm supposed to move from Brussels (Belgium) to SF around April '12, Your work gave me a "little" overview of what I can expect.
I'll be there in a few days for a week, I'm excited after seeing this :)

Nice track choice too, well done.

Well this is a nice way to discover the city, honest and real are my two qualitatives.
TL usually focus on the spectacular, the unseen. Yours states the real thing, a slice of life, so i came here expecting the spectacular and got the real stuff, not the fireworks, but the naturally beauctiful.
With that good choice of music (boards of canada right ?) it feel like i need to visit the city now.
