Maker Workshop - DTV Antenna & Steadicam on MAKE: television
9 months ago
Digital converter box? Check! Great reception? Not so much. John Park shows how to take a fistful of wire coat hangers and make a TV antenna that gives great digital reception. While he’s at it, he also makes a video camera stabilizer using metal piping and counterbalance weight; great for at-home moviemaking.

Mark Smith 9 months agoI built this antenna on a 4' long 2x4. Therefore it is up off the floor, or ready to nail to a tree! The actual area of the antenna is the same, about 20" of the board is used. I conducted both tests for digital tv reception in the same room. With an indoor rabbit ears antenna with antenna hoop and some kind of dial for changing the tuning of the antenna, I got 11 channels, between 15 and 19 on signal strength. With this coat hanger antenna, I get 24 channels, signal strengths up into the 60's. My only mistake, I used 7" v-lengths instead of 8". Read too many sites with different dimensions, I guess. Not sure if 8" would improve it more? Either way, I am happy with the results! If this antenna does not work for you, make sure you have good contacts at each connection (sanding finish off of coat hangers), and make sure you use electrical tape to ensure that the two long wires are not making a connection where they cross at the two locations. Other than that, as far as I can tell, far better than rabbit ears. -
Lila Sakura 9 months agoCan get a handful of UHF but not this one VHF channel I really want. Am trying to connect rabbit ears to the board like the guy on the "leftyventricle" youtube channel did to get VHF -
david hoots 8 months agohey mark smith what do you mean by 7 inch v-lengths or 8 inch v-lengths? The length of the ray on each angle? -
Ben Leivian 4 months agoGetting twice the signal from this antenna. Thanks for the plans!
