This is an excellent video. I like the camera shots, especially when the camera was attached to the bike. And that underground bike parking station makes me swoon.

Awesome, so many good things going one here! Few questions...Do they have speed limits for bikes, seems everyone rides slowly, is there a fast lane? Also, no one seems to wear a helmet, is this due to all the bike only lanes or are the Netherlands too BA for helmets?
  • Caspar van Rest plus 4 months ago
No speedlanes, it's often easy to ride with 2 or even 3 people side to side on a bikelane, so if you wanna go fast there is plenty of space.

No one wears a helmet because crash-rates are low. What I would like to see, is that more kids wear a helmet on their way to school. They are the most vulnerable, but when you get older you are just fine.
  • Daniel Reifenberger 4 months ago
Wow, thanks for the insightful reply. I live in Minneapolis Minnesota where we have a huge bike community and lots of commuters roads into the city. The last thing I would like to know is how you deal with winter? It can get to -40 F here, the cycle roads are not plowed, and ice is a slippy issue. What has the Netherlands done to make riding in the winter possible?
  • Paul James 4 months ago
They grit and plow the bikeways in the same way as the roads, in fact they often plow the bike lanes first as they are more of a lifeline for people.

WHERE ARE THE HELMETS! EVERY ONE NEEDS HELMETS!
how can you ride a bike with out one!? it just doesn't make sense not to. THE GUY even says education about it AND I SEE kids WITH OUT HELMETS!!! wow.
  • sirlukas 4 months ago
Bohdan, when you have an educated society (read: drivers), you do not need one, as you are not that likely to be ignored on the road and hit. Additionally in Netherlands they have cycle roads, that are safe and car free, so no need for helmets too imho.

Nice! Spread the word; cycling as major means of urban mobility!

And for all shouts about helmets; do your research before shouting out that helmets are a 'must'. Rather base comments on facts than on fear. Safety and needed measures are all dependant on context and environment. Why not strife for the best environment, where no helmet is needed? (and yes, this is possible; obviously, if you have looked at the video)

And wouldn't you know it? The obesity rate in the Netherlands is a third of that in the US...who would have guessed!

Fabulous, and none if this is fantasty! :-) I live very close to the cycling bridge that you see in the last part of the video. It's the longest cycling bridge in the country and I use it often for my bike rides out of town. The view from it is majestic!

Lovely. Seeing cycling as a normal way of getting about is brilliant. I hope you will be able to export your knowledge and experience to London and make it cycle friendly for me and my kids.

It's all amazing and lovely, but we don't have to forget that The Netherlands is pretty flat. If you had to use that in a mountainous area you could die of exhaustion to reach destination :)
  • Amsterdamize plus 2 months ago
the flatness & other arguments have grown to mythical proportions, please read this

    hembrow.blogspot.com/2011/02/all-those-myths-and-excuses-in-one-post.html

and consider this context: if flatness has *that* much of an impact on cycling rates, then you'd have to agree that there should have been 100's if not 1000's of 'Amsterdams' around the world by now, but there aren't.

What the main argument is? It's crystal clear in the introduction of the film: when roads become too dangerous & cycling is marginalized, then even the Dutch will stop cycling. Make it fast, direct, convenient en safe & people will.

The people of Bern, Switzerland experienced this as well. Not exactly a flat place, right? Yet the cycle modal share is 15%.

Regarding helmets, someone above said ..."when you have an educated society (read: drivers), you do not need one" (helmet). I beg to differ as I had an accident last year due to a malfunction of the bicycle that had nothing to do with the education of others on the road. I'm thankful that I was wearing mine which may not have saved my life but saved me from getting what would have been some nasty "road rash" to my forehead.

I read this website cyclehelmets.org/1209.html as suggested above and it seems to me more of a rationalization against helmets than a presentation of the facts. If you don't want to wear a helmet then knock yourself out but I'm going to err on the side of caution.
