you should use good headphones/speakers to enjoy the fine audio details (although the audio is compressed here..)

and, i have to say this, if i look at the realtime 60fps version and at this quicktime 25fps, there's really a big difference
the animation is heavily affected by the lower framerate, somehow :(

whatever you won't be able to enjoy the realtime version (unless you show up in my living room), so enjoy this one :)

Where exactly is your living room?
  • defetto plus 10 months ago
    somewhere in Highbury, London.

ahhh the dilema of creating a cool synched micro tight edit at 60fps then having to downsample to pal 25fps!!!!! happens to me all the time, especially for TV,
try explaining why to a trashbat creative director when he says that its not as fast on tv as it is on the quicktime!!!!!!!!!

audio/suit guys dont understand that video isnt in milliseconds!!
lovely look and style, and anything synched to alva noto is kool by me ; )
  • defetto plus 10 months ago
lol i see you got my point
honestly it's the first time i experience such a big difference.. it's probably due to the kind of music, you know all those micro sounds need more than 25fps
    tnx anyway :)

This issue of low temporal resolution is a favorite subject of mine; I would personally love 120fps!

    All these videos
    theestateovcreation.co.uk/aav.html
were done at 60fps for live performance then downsampled to 25fps for pal tv
...a serious difference but if u get it right with the keyframe compression it will fool them ; )
  • defetto plus 10 months ago
i see, but what you mean get it right with the keyframe compression?
so you think i should make a 60fps quicktime and then downsample it?
at the moment i'm rendering directly 25fps, although the realtime applications runs 60fps

render at 60fps uncompressed 10bit quicktime if possible from ur original program, then use a bespoke compression program to re-compress the 60fps to 25fps with a keyframe every frame in the compression settings, should give u a better look, or for uploading here try 29.97 fps.
  • defetto plus 10 months ago
what i do is render a sequence of images, then i load them in quicktime and export the movie from there, but i didnt set keyframes every frame, maybe that's a reason..
29.97 on vimeo is useless cause it's reconverted to 25 anyway

  • aze 10 months ago
    hey looks nice!
if you really don't want to downsample it, you can maybe upload a 1080p version here but it looks not free and it's full of ads..
    beta.vreel.net/
  • defetto plus 10 months ago
tnx, we were talkin about framerate downsample, not resolution.. 720p is enough.. for now :)
  • aze 10 months ago
true that 1080p streaming is heavy.. sorry for the confusion. i was trying to say vreel accept videos in 60fps but it should be okay in 25 with a keyframe every frame as amoeba said.
..and it would be a pity to abandon vimeo for this s*** :)
  • defetto plus 10 months ago
easy, yes i have to try the keyframe every frame thing, i'll probably render another take on this patch tonight, let's see..

personally, I think 24p is superior to any other framrate... it's gorgeous.

Also, I really like the concept, but I think with this kind of style, less is more. Many of the best shots in film and advertisements are these incredibly impressive and massive undertakings that are only shown to you for a few brief moments. It makes your work seem more mysterious... showing a shot too long exploits the concept, I think.
  • defetto plus 10 months ago
    thank you samm.

yes i agree with you about the length, but consider that i use vimeo as kind of a video sketchbook.

so this is more a concept than a video finalized to something, like most of the videos i post on vimeo.
  • Nuno Godinho 10 months ago
    hi defetto,

I disagree with the idea that your videos should be shorter. I see them as live drawings which conceptually could last forever. To me, their length is not related to the song's length (I know they are, but I see that as a coincidence). To me your drawings are not something with introduction, development and conclusion. What you show is, as you say, a sketch, or more than a sketch, each of your vimeo videos are just samples of the endless and expandable worlds you create.

    Cheers!
    Nuno
  • defetto plus 10 months ago
    yes Nuno

i completely agree with you, that's how i see my work and that's why i love the realtime approach

really the 6 minutes of this video are nothing compared to how long i've been lookin at this patch, with all the variations it contains.. this is just an excerpt of an endless world :)

samm was talkin about works for the film/advertisement field, where you have to impress people, but this is not the case..

of course if i had to use this patch for some tv spot or film titles whatever, i would act differently..

btw nuno, i'm going to lisbon for offf09, will you be there?

    cheers man

    cheers man!.

    lol
    tnx man :)

if i get famous, you wouldnt notice, cause i'll be just the same i am now
  • Mothlight Creative plus 10 months ago
certainly, I didn't mean the comment as disrespect. I do think that less is more, and that should be applied across mediums, for instance Hemingway wrote 500 words a day and erased 300 of them. Dillard's last novel (200 pgs) was at one point almost 2000. vimeo is a great sketchbook, I agree.
