Coast Salish Territory – Vancouver BC Canada September 23, 2011
W2 Media Café is the venue for a media briefing – the first since its official opening two days earlier.
The briefing is organized by StopWar.Ca and calls attention to the September 26th visit to our city by former American Vice-President Dick Cheney. He is hosted by the Bon Mots club to promote his new book at the Vancouver Club.
Held in crossmedia studio and performance space in the basement of W2 Media Café, the briefing and it’s called for action is supported by a number of groups generally referred to as civil society. They ask how can the Government of Canada can justify the application of its laws to one person and not another while objecting to the same behavior from other states. They have a straight forward request for Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.
Many civil society groups believe the visit by Dick Cheney undermines the legitimacy of our nation’s right to criticize the actions of other governments. By its inaction, the Canadian government could undermine the legitimacy of our laws and the international conventions and treaties that we purport to support.
We shall see indeed. Some individuals and civil society groups want Dick Cheney to be arrested and charged with war crime should the visit not be stopped. As the wait continues for Minister Kenney’s answer, they are organizing to take to the streets should their request that Cheney be barred from Canada be denied.
