With the temperature hitting 82 degrees F on the second day of Autumn (September 24, 2011) three of us decided to take an afternoon ride up to the remaining remnants of the snowfields on the Northeast rim of Red Lodge Creek Plateau. After trailering the horses to the new Forest Service parking area at the head of the Red Lodge Creek Wilderness Trail it took about 2 1/2 hours to reach the snowfields. The return ride took about 2 hours, with the last couple miles in near darkness. With no moon there was only 'starlight' but the horses had no problem following the trail.
